Anup Kumar to lead India in Kabaddi World Cup

Mumbai: Star raider Anup Kumar from Haryana will lead India in next month's Kabaddi World Cup to be held in Ahmedabad.

All-rounder Manjeet Chillar will be Anup's deputy in the 14-member squad for the tournament that is set to commence on October 7 and will feature 12 teams, it was announced at a media conference here today.

The countries which will take part in the tournament are Iran, South Korea, Bangladesh, USA, England, Australia, Poland, Thailand, Japan, Argentina, Kenya and hosts India.

Balwan Singh is the head coach of the squad with E Baskaran as his deputy.

"The training camp hosted in Ahmedabad involved rigorous training that helped us select the right set of players for the Indian squad. Our aim is to have a balanced team composition for the upcoming World Cup," said Balwan.

"We are expecting the tournament to be more competitive than ever this year. It will be the biggest challenge that the Indian team has faced in recent times."

Cricket legend and captain of the 1983 World Cup winning team, Kapil Dev, unveiled the team jersey. The cricket icon also presented Anup his autographed, colour T-shirt that he had worn in Australia when India played its first limited overs contest Down Under.

Asked by Anup how he handled pressure in tight situations as a captain, Kapil said: "Players don't feel pressure once they are involved with the team. Just enjoy the game and results will come."

"If a mistake is made during play, the captain should take the blame and if the team did well he should credit the entire team for it," explained Kapil.

The squad: Anup Kumar (captain, Haryana), Ajay Thakur (Himachal Pradesh) Deepak Hooda (Haryana), Dharmaraj Cheralathan (Tamil Nadu), Jasvir Singh (Haryana), Kiran Parmar (Gujarat), Manjeet Chillar (vice-captain, Punjab), Mohit Chillar (Punjab), Nitin Tomar (Uttar Pradesh), Pardeep Narwal (Haryana), Rahul Chaudhari (Uttar Pradesh), Sandeep Narwal, Surender Nada Surjeet (all from Haryana).

Kabaddi World Cup: Preview, TV Telecast, Live Steaming, Teams – Here's all you need to know

Ahmedabad: The eighth season of Kabaddi World Cup is going to happen in India at Ahmadabad, Gujarat on 7th October to 22nd October.

The tournament is all set to begin today, with organisers and players of competing countries today expressing confidence of taking the game to new heights of popularity across the globe.

Addressing the media at a pre-event press conference, International Kabaddi Federation chief Deoraj Chaturvedi said that 12 out of 32 Kabaddi playing countries will participate in the fortnight-long tournament, which will be concluding on October 22.

The game, which begins tomorrow at a new multi-purpose stadium, TransStadia, built here under a public private partnership.

"Twelve wonderful teams from five Olympic geographies will clash with each other. Another big milestone is that it will be played at a World Cup facilitated stadium TransStadia here, which has come up here in such a short time," he said.

"Kabaddi is our (India's) own game and I take that today it is played in 32 countries, out of which 12 countries are participating," he said.

The 12 participating teams are India, UAE, England, Australia, Iran, Poland, Thailand, Bangladesh, South Korea, Japan, Argentina, and Kenya.

The tournament, being organised by the International Kabaddi Federation, will be broadcast live in 120-odd countries by Star Sports, which will be a first for a kabaddi tournament, Chaturvedi said.

"It is for the first time that kabaddi will be showcased and exposed to the world, and I am sure this World Cup will create a history and will help us promoting the game throughout the world," he said.

Twelve teams have been divided into two pools of six teams each with inaugural matches being played tomorrow between India and South Korea, and United States and Iran.

Speaking about the tournament, India team captain Anup Kumar accepted that there is pressure due to the presence of world's best teams.

"It is a big tournament and all teams are very good, some teams are new and playing with them will be a new experience, and I believe there is pressure. Our only target is to keep the trophy in the country," he said.

Speaking at the press conference, Anupam Goswami, head of kabaddi at Star Sports, said that the World Cup will further popularise the game across the world, after a successful show of Pro-Kabaddi League.

"We strongly believe that in one of these days we will see India as a powerhouse of sports beyond cricket. Pro Kabaddi League is the second most viewed league after IPL, and we will expand it further in the coming years," he said.

"We hope to make as much an impact for Kabaddi across the world by this tournament as we did for the country with with pro Kabaddi," he added.

Live Streaming: The tournament can be watched online on starsports.com or Hotstar

TV Telecast: Starsports Network will be broadcasting the matches Live.

Teams: United States of America, Canada, England, Australia, Iran, Poland, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Korea, Japan and Kenya are the other nations.

Favourite of favourites India suffer shock defeat against South Korea

New Delhi: Considered as the favourites of favourites, holders India started their Kabaddi World Cup title defence in a shocking way, losing to a spirited South Korean outfit at Ahmedabad on Friday.

After an elaborate opening ceremony, with celebrities from both the sporting and film worlds dominating the glitter quotient, the 2016 edition kick started with India taking on outsiders, but not certainly pushovers Koreans, in a Pool A match.

But the result was a shocker for the packed crowd as the seven-time champions India failed to make a positive start to their campaign, losing 31-34 to South Korea in the opening match.

It was an extraordinary effort by Korea, who came back strongly at the death to clinch a thrilling win over favourites India. It was Korea's first ever win over India.

India were in the lead for most of the contest but Korea managed to reduce India's lead to three points with little over three minutes on the clock at the fag end of the match.

Indian captain Anup Kumar said: "Our raiders weren't at their best today, we also made some mistakes at the end and that's why we lost. But nothing's lost yet. We will get back and correct our mistakes."

India were 18-13 ahead at the half time but Korea were giving them a real run for their money. Anup Kumar lead from the front and has been in top form but his fellow raiders Jasvir Singh and Rahul Chaudhari could not get going.

Dharmaraj Cheralathan and Manjeet Chhillar had a good half.

In the second half, Korea reduced the deficit to just three points at 15-18 but two superb ankle holds from Manjeet put India 22-15 ahead. Not ready to give up, Korea, however, slowly and steadily made it 19-24 and then 26-29 before leveling at 31-31.

Deepak Hooda was then outnumbered by Korea, who went into the lead at 33-31, courtesy Super raid by Jan Kun Lee.

The two-week event which will see 12 teams lock horns with each other is being held in India`s western city of Ahmedabad.

Kabaddi features two seven-member teams facing off on a tennis court-sized pitch.

A "raider" from each team has to dash into the rival half and touch players from the opposing team without being tackled before escaping back to safety on their side of the court.

The game is played in around 35 countries but India has traditionally dominated the sport, winning all seven gold medals at the Asian Games since it was introduced in 1990.

Pakistan, another strong team, were barred from the ongoing competition due to a spike in tension between the nuclear-armed neighbours.

In the day's second match, another favourites Asian Games silver medalists Iran thumped United States 51-15 in their Pool B opener. Unlike other sporting rivalries between the two nations which have a history of animosity, the Kabaddi match witnessed nothing of that sort.

India will play Australia tommorow in their second match.
