General News Airtel 4G Speed Challenge ads found misleading by ASCI

Airtel’s new 4G ads are all over the television, hoardings and newspapers, challenging one to find a faster network. The Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) has however asked the operator to take down ts ad campaign before October 7, following a consumer complaint.

A consumer complained that Airtel’s 4G speed challenge was misleading and so were its claims that it boasts the ‘fastest network ever’. It doesn’t take into account location or network congestion. For example, a favorable location in a lightly loaded 3G network can certainly give a better network performance than a congested 4G network access at the cell edge.

ASCI has upheld the complaint saying, “The claim in the Ad, “Airtel 4G is the fastest network ever” and “If your network is faster, we will pay your mobile bills for life”, is misleading by omission in the absence of appropriate disclaimers in the print, TV , hoarding advertisements itself. The advertisement contravened Chapter 1.4 of the Code.”

The Chapter 1.4 of ASCI’s code says that no company should mislead a consumer by distorting/hiding facts. Chapter 1.4 reads, “Advertisements shall not contain statements or visual presentation which directly or by implication or by omission or by ambiguity or by exaggeration are likely to mislead the consumer about the product advertised or the advertiser or about any other product or advertiser,”
ASCI’s order also adds, “We have advised the Advertiser to withdraw or to modify appropriately the said advertisement before the October 7, 2015 or seek a review of the decision.”

BGR India reached out to Airtel and a company spokesperson says, “4G technology is proven to deliver the fastest internet experience, and the same has been accepted globally. As the only commercial providers of this world class technology in India, our advertising campaign revolves around the 4G promise of fastest internet speeds and features a set of claims that are based on rigorous test conditions.”

As for ASCI’s demission the company spokesperson says, “We are engaging with ASCI to provide them with the technical data in support of our advertising claims and are following the prescribed process to schedule a review of the said issue. We are confident of getting a favorable response from them.”

Yes, even now 3G is not not fully available (full speed) in most places, how  can we expect 4G services in such places. The above ad should specify where such services are availaly in full force. Exclamation
