General News Airtel challenges Reliance JioGigaFiber with unlimited data on broadband plans

#1
Reliance Jio commenced registration for its broadband service, called JioGigaFiber, on August 15 and the competition seems to have already taken action to counter the service. While BSNL has been the most active among all broadband service providers to challenge Jio, Airtel is now joining the upcoming tariff war in wired broadband service.

The leading telecom service provider has removed fair usage policy or data limit on select monthly home broadband packs in over 20 key markets. It has turned them into unlimited data plans in an attempt to counter Jio’s fiber-to-the-home broadband service. Until now, Bharti Airtel had offered unlimited home broadband plans only in Hyderabad and seems to be extending it to other markets as well. The move should help the telecom player retain its nearly 2.4 million active wired broadband users.

The company had given 15-20 percent discounts to customers opting for its home broadband packs, ET reports. The discounts were offered on packs for six months and one year with broadband speeds of up to 300Mbps across 89 cities. Now, it has gone ahead to convert these plans into unlimited broadband packs.

Reliance Jio is expected to commence commercial availability of its home broadband service later this year, and reports suggest it will start at about Rs 500 a month. Jio is uniquely positioning its service as something that not only offers broadband data but also combines TV service via Jio IPTV box.

Airtel had already cut rates earlier for some of its broadband plans and increased data allowances to retain customers. The company has also converted all of its subscribers to the V-fiber network that offers speeds up to 300Mbps over Wi-Fi, and is capable of being upgraded to offer 1Gbps broadband speed. However, analysts doubt if Airtel will be able to challenge JioGigaFiber when it becomes available across markets.
