NEW DELHI: Solutions and analytics provider OpenSignal in its data shows Airtel as the fastest telecom operator in India in terms of 4G LTE speeds in most of the metro cities in India with average download speeds over 10 Mbps.

Airtel leads in cities including Ranchi, Dehradun Shillong, Kolkata, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Indore, Goa, New Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore and Ahmedabad. In the eastern cities such as Kolkata and Guwahati, Airtel has an average speed of up to 24 Mbps.

Bitter rival Reliance Jio though offers faster speeds in cities including Shimla, Kochi and Lucknow, with average download speeds of over 14 Mbps.

Idea Cellular is the leading operator in terms of speeds in Hyderabad where it has average download speeds of 9.3 Mbps, followed by Airtel and Jio.

The data comes amid an ongoing spat between Jio and Airtel over the issue of fastest speeds, as Ookla had recently declared Airtel as the fastest network in India to which Jio objected, citing a technical flaw in the methodology.

Ookla however defended its speedtest results, saying that it fully stands behind the accuracy and reliability of the methodology used to assign India’s fastest mobile network’ tag to Bharti Airtel.

Jio retorted, saying Ookla's statement was an admission that its method was faulty, and hence, wasn’t foolproof.

Also, a recent study by Bank of America Merrill Lynch (BoAML) released its finding stating that more than a half or 57% of Reliance Jio subscribers feel that the telco’s data speed was faster than that of rival companies.

Yesterday, OpenSignal introduced a methodology to examine the mobile network experience where it recommended first taking an average of each individual user’s tests during the sample period and then weighing those averages equally in the overall analysis.

According to previous TRAI data, Reliance Jio’s speeds have improved with the telco achieving speeds of up to 9 Mbps in February 2017 and Airtel’s speed also increased 2 times to 8.4 Mbps in January 2017.
