General News Airtel home broadband customers gets data rollover facility

NEW DELHI: Bharti Airtel, India's leading telecom operator on Tuesday extended its data rollover facility to its home broadband customers, under which its customers will be able to accumulate up to 1000 GB data. Airtel's move comes amid Reliance Jio's efforts to roll out its free JioFiber Preview offer for its broadband service in select areas of Mumbai, Delhi-NCR, Ahmedabad, Jamnagar, Surat and Vadodara. Jio's service is widely expected to commercially hit the market around early next year.

Airtel had earlier this year rolled out the feature for its postpaid subscribers in the country as part of Project Next. Airtel Home Broadband has over 2.1 million customers and is the second largest home broadband provider in India.

“With this innovation, our home broadband users no longer have to worry about their unused data, which will always be available to them. Home broadband continues to drive the massive growth of in-home consumption of online content and the combination of Airtel V-Fiber and ‘data rollover’ will enable a truly world-class experience for today’s digital homes," George Mathen, CEO – Homes, Bharti Airtel, said

Home broadband will become crucial for high-end data users, given the affordable pricing in India, analysts say, adding that that Jio's entry would open up the market and create more demand.

In order to better compete with JioFiber, which will be offering speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second, Airtel has already introduce Airtel Surprises and myHome Rewards that offered free additional data benefits to customers. Besides, it had also rolled out ‘V-Fiber’, which offers speeds up to 100 Mbps. The V-Fiber service is now available in 87 cities across India.

The ‘V-Fiber’ service is based on vectorization technology that allows its copper-based fixed-line network to offer up to 100 Mbps to homes. V-Fiber is available in areas where Airtel doesn’t have fiber to offer broadband service.

Reliance Jio is currently identifying mega clusters such as high-rise residential apartments and commercial establishments as a part of its phase-II expansion programme to connect 100 locations by December. Reliance Industries Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani had recently said that optical fibre and fixed line broadband is a next big monetisation opportunity for Reliance Jio.
