Airtel tops in call drop rate and download speeds with Jio close behind in latest TRAI independent drive test report

In a recent report on the findings of an independent drive test published by TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India), the country’s largest operator Airtel has come out on top. The test was conducted by TRAI in the Delhi license area, which includes the city-state of Delhi as well as Ghaziabad, Noida, Gurugram and Faridabad in the neighboring states of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana.

While a lot of data has been published as part of the test results, the noteworthy points are the drop call rate percentage and 4G data download speeds. Airtel has come out on top among all operators in the circle during the tests, with a call drop rate of 0.3 percent on its 2G and 3G voice call networks. Among the operators tested, government-owned MTNL had the worst rate, with 19.5 percent of the calls in the test dropped.

VoLTE was only tested for Jio, which does not control spectrum on the 2G and 3G networks. Jio has a call drop rate of 0.2 percent on VoLTE, according to the report. Airtel, Vodafone and Idea have rolled out VoLTE for calls in limited circles, but these have not been tested in this particular test.

The test also checked download speeds for data transfers using data networks, with Airtel coming out on top in this field as well. Airtel had the fastest download speed on both 3G and 4G networks, at 3.3mbps and 8.9mbps respectively. Jio and Vodafone came in at second and third respectively in the test. Airtel also boasted of the lowest web-browsing and video-streaming delays in the test.

While the test results are only for the Delhi-NCR circle, Airtel is widely believed to offer the best network across India for calls and data. The Indian telecom sector has trimmed massively, with only a handful of operators remaining in a strong position. Airtel is also the largest operator in India by subscribers currently, but the expected merger between Vodafone and Idea will see the merged entity take over as the largest in the country.
