General News Amazon Fire TV Stick set for India launch
MUMBAI: After launching Amazon Prime Video in India, Amazon is importing its popular TV streaming product to India even as it aggressively competes to lead the e-commerce sector in the world’s fastest-growing economy.

Amazon Fire TV Stick, a competitor to Google’s Chromecast, Roku and many other streaming devices, is expected to launch in India at an introductory price of Rs 1,999 for existing Prime customers.

For non-Prime subscribers, the Fire TV Stick may be priced at Rs 3,999. The Fire TV Stick could initially be sold on Amazon India, Croma and Reliance Digital Stores in select Indian cities.

The Fire TV Box would be the next to follow in the slew of Amazon launches in India. The Fire TV box, which connects to your TV with an HDMI cable, is faster and has more memory. It has more apps than the stick.

The Amazon Fire TV is a streaming media player that displays internet content on your TV. The Fire TV comes in two models—Amazon Fire TV (a small box) and the Fire TV Stick.

The main feature of the Fire TV Stick is voice commands supported by Alexa. The device is powered by 1GB RAM and a quad-core processor.

Some of the popular apps available on the Fire TV platform include Prime Video, Netflix and YouTube. Amazon could also start negotiations to carry Indian TV streaming apps such as dittoTV, Sony Liv and Hotstar. It would, however, be too far-fetched to conclude that Amazon Fire TV would seek to replace DTH or cable TV.

Incidentally, DTH operator Airtel Digital TV has launched Internet TV, a hybrid set-top box (STB) powered by Android TV that brings the best of online content to the TV screen along with a bouquet of over 500 satellite TV channels. Airtel Internet TV comes preloaded with Netflix, YouTube, Google Play Music, Google Play Games, Airtel Movies and more. It also comes with access to Google Play Store, allowing users to download their favourite apps, content and games on to their TV.

The hybrid STB is priced at Rs 4,999 with three months’ Digital TV subscription. Also, as a limited period offer, customers can pay Rs 7,999 and get the Airtel Internet TV with one year subscription.

Earlier, Netflix had entered into a major partnership with Airtel Digital and Videocon d2h to launch smart STBs that will come preloaded with the Netflix app.
