General News Apple iPhone 6s vs Samsung Galaxy S6: Price, specifications and features compared
#1

Apple finally launched the much awaited iPhone 6s at its special event in San Francisco. The iPhone 6s carries the same design language as last year’s iPhone 6, with most of the changes coming under the hood. The new 3D Touch feature, faster processor and higher-resolution cameras are some of the major changes. We pit the iPhone 6s against Samsung’s Galaxy S6 to find out how they compare.

Price: The Galaxy S6 is priced at Rs 39,500 for the base 32GB storage variant and Rs 46,500 for the 64GB variant. On the other hand, the iPhone 6s price starts from $199 for 16GB variant and goes all the way up to $399 for 128GB variant. However, these are the US pricing on a two-year contract. While Indian availability and pricing details aren’t known yet, the unlocked iPhone 6s starts from $650, which is approximately Rs 42,500. But we would be naive to think Apple would price it below Rs 50,000 whenever it plans to launch it later this year.

Specifications and Features: The Samsung Galaxy S6 flaunts a 5.1-inch Super AMOLED QHD display running at a resolution of 1440×2560 pixels, and is covered with Corning Gorilla Glass 4 Protection. The iPhone 6s flaunts a 4.7-inch LED-backlit HD display running at a resolution of 750×1334 pixels and is covered by Ion-strengthened glass with oleophobic coating. Clearly the Galaxy S6 has a superior display.

The Galaxy S6 is powered by Samsung’s homebrew Exynos 7420 64-bit octa-core processor paired with Mali-T760MP8 GPU and 3GB of RAM, whereas the iPhone 6s is powered by Apple’s 64-bit A9 processor paired with M9 motion coprocessor. In terms of storage, the Galaxy S6 is available in 32GB and 64GB variants, whereas the iPhone 6s comes with 16GB, 64GB and 128GB storage variants. Neither of the devices come with expandable storage options.

In terms of design, the Galaxy S6 comes with unibody design with front and back glass panel, whereas the iPhone 6s comes with a full metal unibody design and body made from strong aluminum.

On the photography front, the Galaxy S6 sports a 16-megapixel camera of aperture f/1.9 along with dual LED flash and Optical Image Stabilization (OIS), whereas the iPhone 6s comes with a 12-megapixel rear camera with dual-tone LED flash but lacks OIS, which is exclusive to the iPhone 6s Plus. Both smartphones are capable of recording 4K videos. Slow motion video recording is also available on both smartphones, with Samsung Galaxy S6 supporting 720p at 120fps, the iPhone 6s supports 720p at 240fps.

The front camera on the Galaxy S6 is a 5-megapixel unit and supports wide-angle selfie. The iPhone 6s also comes with a 5-megapixel front camera that can capture full HD videos. It also comes with a new Retina Flash, in which the display lights up bright, while taking low-light selfies. While the iPhone 6s front camera supports 720p video recording, the Galaxy S6 front camera supports 2K video recording.

Connectivity features on both the Galaxy S6 and the iPhone 6s include 4G LTE, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi 802.11ac and GPS. One of the talking points about iPhone 6s is that it supports 23-LTE bands, which means it can be used in most parts of the globe. While the Galaxy S6 is equipped with a 2550mAh battery with Fast Charging feature, the iPhone 6s comes with 1715mAh battery.

On the software front, the Galaxy S6 runs on Android 5.1 Lollipop OS wrapped under Samsung’s TouchWiz UI, whereas the iPhone 6s will ship with iOS 9 out-of-the-box. Some of the unique features of the Samsung Galaxy S6 includes the fingerprint sensor, heart rate sensor, Samsung Pay, USB OTG and USB host, whereas the iPhone 6s comes with Touch ID fingerprint sensor and Apple Pay feature.

While it’s difficult to choose the best one, both smartphones are closely priced. It ultimately boils down to the type of OS you prefer, while iOS is more secured, Android OS gives you more freedom in terms of customization and development.
