General News Apple introduces Memoji which is really Yahoo Avatars reborn in 2018

Apple announced Memoji in the keynote address of its annual developer conference, Worldwide Developers Conference or WWDC 2018. Memoji is a gradual expansion of Animoji, 3D emoji’s that the company announced along with its iPhone X last year. Though, Memoji is not the complete picture if we have to talk about this new feature. Apple first introduced “tongue detection” for the Animoji so that now you could make your Animoji stick out tongue to make it more dynamic or for more fun.

The company also introduced four new Animojis for users to choose – a ghost, tiger, koala, and a T-rex. Now moving back to Memoji, this feature allows you to turn yourself into an Animoji where you can customize your skin tone, facial features, hair, the color of your hair, and add accessories such as earrings or glasses. This means that you can completely customize your Animoji to look like you. Memoji then can be used while conversing with your friends, family and other people in messages like any regular Animoji.

Users can also overlay the customized cartoon version of yourself on your face to take a selfie or while in a Group FaceTime call.

Regardless of everything, we could not help but think that Memoji really is what Yahoo Avatars was back in the day. The small differences between the two are that Avatars was all about 2D and it extended beyond just the face and one could customize the clothes and the background of the Avatar. In addition to all that, there was no “tongue detection” or that face tracking technology to make the Avatars that expressive.

Talking about the keynote address, this was not the only thing that was announced by the company. Other announcements included iOS 12, watchOS 5, improvements to tvOS, Siri-Shortcuts, macOS Mojave, the upcoming ability for developers to port their iOS apps to macOS, improved Apple CarPlay, Group FaceTime, and ARKit 2.0.
