Ravichandran Ashwin, the Indian offspinner, reclaimed the top spot in the ICC Player Rankings for Test all-rounders from Shakib Al Hasan on Monday (March 13).

The offspinner had slipped to second place in the rankings after the first Test against Australia in Pune. He scalped seven wickets but registered low scores in both the innings in the first game. However, Shakib's poor outing versus Sri Lanka in the first Test in Galle meant that he dropped points and allowed the Indian offspinner to overtake him.

During the second Test against Australia in Bengaluru, Ashwin scalped eight more wickets to take his tally to 15 in the ongoing four-match Test series, while Shakib took three wickets and registered a total of 31 runs in the first Test against Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, New Zealand captain, Kane Williamson, leapfrogged Joe Root to take the second position in the Rankings for Test batsmen. Williamson scored 130 during the first Test against South Africa in Dunedin and took his points tally to 869, still 67 points behind No. 1 ranked Steve Smith.

The rise of Williamson meant that Root and Virat Kohli dropped a place each. The Indian skipper slipped down to fourth place, while Root currently occupies the third spot. Dean Elgar also gained 10 spots after scoring 140 and 89 in Dunedin. He is now ranked 11th, only seven points behind team-mate AB de Villiers, who is ranked No. 7.

Faf du Plessis's twin fifties in the first Test helped him to take the 19th spot, while Kusal Mendis's 194 and 19 against Bangladesh propelled him to the 23rd position in the rankings. Bangladesh skipper Mushfiqur Rahim also jumped to 29th place owing to scores of 85 and 34 in Galle.

The top 10 of the Player Rankings for bowlers, however, remained unchanged. Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja held on to the top spot, but Dilruwan Perera and Mehedi Hasan moved to 14th and 36th position respectively, while Keshav Maharaj's maiden fifer saw him jump to 52nd spot in the rankings.
