Continuing its naming confusion, Asus has introduced a new smartphone in its Zenfone Max-series called the Zenfone 3S Max (ZC521TL). Coming barely four months after launching the Zenfone 3 Max-series in India, the new smartphone comes with a better SoC and runs Android 7.0 Nougat out-of-the-box. With focus on battery life, Asus has also added a slightly larger 5,000mAh battery on the smartphone that can last for up to two days or more. It also features reverse charging mode, allowing you to use the Zenfone 3S Max as a power bank to charge other devices.

The Zenfone 3S Max is priced at Rs 14,999 and will be available to purchase both online and offline retail stores starting today at online and offline retailers. It will be offered in gold and black color variants. Besides the battery boost and Android 7.0 Nougat OS, Asus has also improved the design. You still get a metal unibody design with curved edges and a compact form factor. However, the fingerprint sensor has been moved to the front, and embedded inside the physical home button. Asus has gotten rid of the capacitive navigation buttons and they are now replaced by on-screen ones.

Asus Zenfone 3S Max (ZC521TL) specifications
The smartphone features a 5.2-inch HD (720p) display with 2.5D curved glass on top. Its sad to see Asus using an HD display, when even smartphones priced under Rs 10,000 come with full HD panels. At the heart of the Zenfone 3S Max runs MediaTek’s 64-bit MT6750 octa-core SoC (eight Cortex A-53 cores) clocked at 1.5GHz, paired with 3GB of RAM and 32GB onboard storage. The smartphone also features a hybrid dual-SIM card, allowing you to further expand the storage using a microSD card.

In the photography department, you get a 13-megapixel rear camera of aperture f/2.0 with PDAF, and dual-tone LED flash. It supports full HD video recording at 30fps. For video calling and selfies, you get an 8-megapixel front-facing camera of aperture f/2.0 and 85-degrees wide angle lens.

Connectivity options in the smartphone include dual SIM card slots, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and 4G with VoLTE. On the software front, the Zenfone 3S Max runs Android 7.0 Nougat wrapped under Zen UI.

Asus Zenfone 3S Max (ZC521TL) competition
At its price point, the Zenfone 3S Max will face fierce competition from the likes of Lenovo P2, which also comes with a 5,000mAh battery, and the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, which comes with a 4,100mAh battery.

Lenovo’s P2 is priced at Rs 16,999 and features a 5.5-inch full-HD (1080p) Super AMOLED display. It is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 625 octa-core SoC clocked at 2GHz, paired with 3GB RAM and 32GB internal storage. With 13-megapixel rear camera and 5-megapixel selfie camera, connectivity options include dual-SIM card slots, 4G with VoLTE support, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, microUSB, and USB OTG. The smartphone runs on Android Marshmallow OS.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, on the other hand, is offered in three variants, with prices starting at Rs 9,999 and going all the way up to Rs 12,999. Featuring a 5.5-inch full HD (1080p) IPS display with 2.5D Curved Glass protection, the Redmi Note 4 is also powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 625 octa-core SoC. Talking about variants, you can go for the one with 2GB of RAM + 16GB storage, 3GB of RAM + 32GB storage and 4GB of RAM + 64GB storage.

Other features include 13-megapixel rear camera with dual tone LED flash, 5-megapixel selfie camera, 4,100mAh battery, dual-SIM support, 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. It runs on Android Marshmallow-based MIUI 8, and will soon be getting Android 7.0 Nougat update.
