General News Doordarshan to acquire sports rights, begins exercise to beef up DD Sports

MUMBAI: Public broadcaster Doordarshan has started the exercise to strengthen its free-to-air (FTA) sports channel, DD Sports.

DD has decided to acquire live/deferred live media rights to sporting properties and sports documentaries from production houses and sports management agencies, a move that can have impact on the sports broadcasting industry.

The telecast rights should be for at least three years and include all channels of Doordarshan (terrestrial and satellite).

DD has issued two proposals inviting production houses/sports management agencies with appropriate rights for acquiring sports programmes in live/deferred live/recorded formats under acquisition category and documentaries under sponsored category.

The last date for submitting the proposals is 15 days from the date of announcement. The envelope containing the proposal needs to be superscribed ‘Proposal under Sponsored Category for DD Sports’ or ‘Proposal under Acquisition Category for DD Sports’.

The offer from agencies/production houses have to include all terms and conditions as per the sponsored guidelines. Software should be delivered at DD’s doorstep, with tape cost, duty and freight charges paid by supplier/agency. Taped programme, if technically not OK for telecast, has to be replaced immediately by the supplier/agency.

In case of acquisition category, the offer must include all terms and conditions including the rights fees, telecast mode and programme format. Live signal should reach its control room.

Moreover, rights should include all channels of Doordarshan (terrestrial and satellite) for radio, internet and new media rights that may be available at the time of supply.

Telecast rights should be for at least three years or perpetual. Doordarshan will reserve the rights to monetise from the telecast of the software supplied. All programmes (live/taped) should be free from all commercials.

Taped programmes should be delivered within 15 days from the conclusion of the event, or 20 days from the date of approval from Doordarshan in case of solicited software.

The applicants would be required to pay a non-refundable processing fee of Rs 10,000 for each of the proposal separately. The fee would be payable through bank draft in favour of PBBCI, Director General, Doordarshan, New Delhi, payable at New Delhi.

The sports content under the acquisition category may include the following:

a) Live and deferred live sporting events of international standards with the matches played overseas or in India. This includes contemporary league matches of popular sports like football, super series matches of badminton, ATP challengers in lawn tennis, renowned boxing bouts and more.

b) Documentaries based on the leading sports personalities that are contemporary in nature but timeless in value. These include all leading sports personalities who are either hugely popular in India or are Indian, or both.

c) Documentaries and capsules that make sportspersons and sports lovers aware about the modern sporting techniques, sports-specific fitness drills, injury management, sports nutrition, and sports-specific academies and universities.

d) Documentaries and shows encapsulating the modern trends, lifestyles and on- and off-the-field persona of popular sportspersons. The persona part should include facets that inspire the future generation.

e) Documentaries and shows encapsulating the history and legacy of the marquee tournaments and games delivered in powerful and elegant manner.

f) Sports shows based on current adventure sports and sports amusement series like batman and sumo wrestlers.

g) Sports shows/documentaries/events based on traditional and rural sports in India.

The sports content under the sponsored category may include:

a) Documentaries based on leading sports personalities that are contemporary in nature but timeless in value. These include all leading sports personalities who are either hugely popular in India or are Indian, or both.

b) Documentaries and capsules that make sportspersons and sports lovers aware about the modern sporting techniques, sports-specific fitness drills, injury management, sports nutrition, and sports-specific academies and universities.

c) Documentaries and shows encapsulating the modern trends, lifestyles, and on- and off-the-field persona of popular sportspersons. The persona part should include facets that should inspire the future generation.

d) Documentaries and shows encapsulating the history and legacy of the marquee tournaments and games delivered in a powerful and elegant manner.
