General News Facebook Live video: Now broadcast live video from your desktop and laptop

#1
Since about a year now, Facebook has been going big on live videos and 360 degree images on its platform. After live videos were launched on Facebook’s mobile app last year, the feature saw a lot of traction, becoming one of the most popular features on the platform as well. And now, Facebook is expanding the feature to desktop as well. Starting today, announced Facebook, people around the world will be able to broadcast live videos to Facebook from their desktop or laptop computers.

Using the feature is as simple as it’s been on the mobile platform. Simply head to your News Feed or Timeline, and next to the options to add image or video to your post, you will now see a Live Video option as well. Just tap on it and follow the prompts to add a description and choose your audience. If you think of it, it’s actually a very beneficial feature addition for both Facebook and its users. For users, the broadcasting option for desktop or laptop computers provide a stable camera setup that can be beneficial to many types of Facebook Live broadcasts like Q&As, vlogs and tutorials. As for Facebook, the addition of convenience to the feature will likely add big time to the user base as well.

In addition to that, Facebook writes in its blog post, that they have also added a new feature that makes it easy to use streaming software or external hardware when going live from a computer. This capability previously was possible only through a Page, but now it can be used through Profiles as well.

“If you’re a gamer, this new feature makes it easier than ever to stream your PC gameplay to friends and followers and engage with them while you play. If you’re giving your friends or followers a tutorial or how-to guide, you can incorporate on-screen graphics, titles, and overlays. Or if you’re an artist, you can go live and switch seamlessly between cameras as you narrate the process,” the blog notes.

This update makes sense as it will now let people share their screens, insert graphics, switch cameras, or use professional equipment in Facebook Live videos. Plus, now they will also have the option to broadcast to Facebook Groups they are a part of, Facebook Events they’re part of, or Facebook Pages they manage. Users can go live with streaming software or external hardware directly from News Feed, their profile, by going to Facebook live stream landing page. With the existing popularity of the live video feature, we can’t how or why the new update would not add to the traction.

Few months ago, Facebook also added the live video feature to Instagram Stories, which was recently updated with the option to be saved by the broadcaster. As for popularity, according to a recent report by social media analytics platform Quintly, Facebook‘s video dominance becomes even clearer when looking at individual posts as nearly 85 percent of posts on Facebook use the social network’s native video, while YouTube represented just over 10 percent of posts and Vimeo and other sources accounted for less than 5 percent.
