General News Facebook launches Notify for iOS; here’s everything you need to know

In October Twitter launched Moments, a tool that will help users keep track of trending stories in real time. As expected, Facebook is taking on this concept by launching a standalone app called Notify for iPhone users.

Notify seems to be building on the Instant Articles service, which Facebook started testing back in May. The basic objective of Notify is to provide breaking news alerts via push notifications, even if your phone is asleep.

Rather than bombarding you with all sorts of notifications, Facebook will only push news tailored to your interests. One can select specific news categories from options like business, celebrities and gossips, culture, entertainment, fashion and beauty, food and drink, gaming, relationships, sports, and shopping to name a few.

Alternatively, you can also select ‘stations’, which is essentially news from particular sources. So for example, you can select scorecards from FOX Sports, movie trailers from Fandango, breaking news from CNN, fashion news from Vogue, or meditation exercises from Headspace.

Sources: Speaking of sources, Facebook has roped in dozens of publishers to push news onto the app. These include ABC, Access Hollywood, Billboard, Bleacher Report, Bloomberg Business, BuzzFeed, Condé Nast Traveler, CNN, Comedy Central, Cosmopolitan, Discovery, E!, ELLE Magazine, Esquire, Food & Wine, Fortune, GQ Magazine, Huffington Post, Hulu, InStyle, Mashable, People, Quartz, Sports Illustrated, Techmeme, Vanity Fair, The Verge, Vevo, Vogue, Washington Post and Wired among others.

Users will be sent notifications throughout the day from their selected sources or stations with a quick summary of the news on the lockscreen itself. Tapping the notification will take you to the app where you can read the whole story, or even visit the publisher’s website. Further options include sharing news stories with friends via text, email or social media, as well as saving a particular article in the Saved Notifications List to read it later.

Availability: Facebook has launched Notify only in the US for now with no word on a global rollout. The app, as mentioned above, is also restricted to iPhones, and you can head over to the App Store to download it for free.
