Google has made a major announcement regarding Gmail. In an official blog post, Google said that Gmail will stop working on Chrome Browser version 53 and below by the end of this year. Google encourages Gmail users to upgrade their Chrome Browser to the latest version which is v55. Chrome users won’t be the only ones affected by this, as Google said that Gmail users who are still on Windows XP and Windows Vista will be affected as well. Considering how Gmail is among the most widely used and free email service globally, this comes as a big announcement to its users in every sector, whether personal or professional.
The company says that the move is occurring because “Chrome Browser v55 contains several important security updates.” As for those who are still on Windows XP and Windows Vista, Chrome Browser v49 was the last version created for these operating systems. Citing the fact that Microsoft stopped supporting these systems in 2015, Google strongly encourages Gmail users on XP and Vista “to migrate to more secure and supported systems.” To get this message out more strongly, Google is going to show a banner from February 8, which will run on top of the Gmail interface for people who are still on the older Chrome Browser v53.
Google is asking its Gmail users to update their Chrome Browser at the earliest as it enlisted the possible outcomes of not doing so. For those who continue to use older versions of the Chrome Browser, Gmail will become more vulnerable to security threats and risks prevailing online. In addition to this, these users will not have access to the new features and bugfixes on Gmail. As the year ends, Gmail users on Chrome Browser v53 and below will then be directed to its basic HTML version. This could start as early as December 2017.
As a cautionary note, the company says, “Google does not typically announce when we discontinue support for older versions of Chrome browser because of our current supported browser policy, which states that only the most recent version of Chrome is supported. This announcement was made given the expected impact on Windows XP and Windows Vista users and known security risks.”
Google seems to be making strong developments on the security of Gmail users, as it had recently announced that it will stop the transfer of Javascript files from February 13. Gmail already restricts file attachments such as .exe, .msc, and .bat, and it will now stop allowing its users to attach .js files. Google said that an in-product warning will appear which will explain the reason behind doing so. Google further said that users who still require sending Javascript files for security reasons can do so via Google Drive, Google Cloud Storage or other storage solutions. In its latest development, Google had updated its long forgotten Gmail app for iOS devices. After four years, Google brought with the update a major feature which is ‘undo send’. The Gmail for iOS version 5.0.3 now allows its users to prevent sending or recall emails immediately.
