Two days ago, BlackBerry announced that it will discontinue its Classic smartphone. And of course, we all assumed, that was the end of the tactile keypad as well. However, Blackberry in a fresh announcement has reassured that even though the BlackBerry Classic smartphone will be discontinued, its signature QWERTY keypad will continue to live on.

Alex Thurber, the Senior Vice President for BlackBerry Global Device Sales, posted on Twitter recently dispelling the fear that it’s not a goodbye to the tactile keyboard anytime soon.

In response to some recent press reports, I wa to be clear that @BlackBerry users have nothin to fear -- the keyboard is here to stay...

Launched in 2014, the BlackBerry Classic came as a sort of replacement to the BBOS-powered Q20 smartphone. The Classic sported the archetypal BlackBerry design with built-in QWERTY keyboard and a touchscreen.

Recent rumor is that BlackBerry’s working on three new Android-powered smartphones. Leaked photos of a smartphone, codenamed Hamburg, recently surfaced online. The Hamburg smartphone is likely to be launched by the name of BlackBerry NEON. Other than this one, two other smartphones, codenamed Argon and Mercury, are also speculated to be in the pipeline.

According to the rumors, the BlackBerry Mercury, is likely to revive the classic qwerty keyboard, thus confirming Thurber’s Twitter post. Currently in the market are BlackBerry Passport and BlackBerry Priv, both of which support a tactile QWERTY keypad. So the fans be assured that the much-adored BlackBerry classic keypad is here to stay.
