Google ‘Fast Pair’ brings hassle-free Bluetooth pairing for devices running Android 6.0 and above

Apple introduced effortless wireless pairing between iPhone (or Mac) and AirPods, the company’s first truly wireless headphones. The method eliminates the frustrating process of putting the Bluetooth device and smartphone in pairing mode, search for the device and then pair. Google has also been working on its own solution to make the device pairing easier, and ‘Fast Pair’ is the company’s answer to Apple’s effortless AirPods pairing.

Some Bluetooth speakers and headphones do come with NFC (Near Field Communication), which makes Bluetooth pairing pretty convenient. However, not all Android smartphones feature NFC, especially the entry-level and mid-range ones. To solve this problem, Google has started rolling out Fast Pair for devices running on Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS and above.

Fast Pair uses Bluetooth LE (Low Energy) and the Android smartphone’s location to discover Bluetooth accessories that are in close proximity. As soon as the accessory is discovered, users will get a pop-up notification for the same, and all you need to do is tap on it to pair the device. Once the connection is established, success notification will appear on the screen.

For the hassle-free process to work, you must have Google Play Services v 11.7+ running on your Android smartphone. On its blog, Google mentioned that users can give the feature a try when using Google Pixel Buds, Libratone’s Q Adapt On-Ear and Plantronics Voyager 8200 series wireless Bluetooth headphones.

When you have a Fast Pair-enabled device nearby, your Android smartphone will also fetch the product image of the Bluetooth accessory and the product name if it exists on the Google server. What’s more, if there is a companion app for the accessory, it will also prompt you about the same. Often noise-cancelling headphones and speakers come with companion apps. For instance, JBL’s Pulse Bluetooth speaker has a companion app that lets you tweak different settings of the LED lights – such as intensity, pattern when music is playing, and more.
