General News Google Allo chat app features, sticker packs revealed ahead of launch

Google Allo app could launch soon, and key features of the app have been leaked ahead of the upcoming release. Duo, the video-calling app for one-on-one interactions, has already gone live across the world, and it’s a matter of time before Allo is unveiled. Allo and Duo were first announced at the Google I/O conference in May 2016.

With Allo, the search giant is expected to take another stab at mobile messaging, a space where it has lost to players like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Snapchat to name a few. In an interaction with IndianExpress.com, Google’s Product Manager Amit Fulay had said the company is pitching Allo and Duo as more consumer-centric apps, while Hangouts will be viewed as more of an enterprise offering.

Allo is the app powered by Google’s new machine-learning assistant called Google Assistant, and will offer more fun features like stickers, the ability to make reservations for a restaurant, share pictures and draw on them, etc.

Now AndroidPolice has put out a details on Allo’s features, which includes some pretty NFSW-sticker packs. Other features of Allo being reported by AndroidPolice are the ability to edit photos, share location, share GIFs. However, the app won’t let users share music or documents yet, adds the report.

Allo has the edge in GIF sharing over WhatsApp, although Facebook Messenger already supports this feature. Rumours also claim WhatsApp does plan to bring this feature to app as well. Interestingly Allo will also an “annotation feature” where users will be able to draw on photos with different colours, but apparently there are not many personalisations you can do on this drawing bit.

Allo will come with three sticker packs pre-installed, adds the report, although it will have around 24 more to offer. Some of the stickers will be animated, notes AndroidPolice.

Google’s Allo will also offer an Incognito mode, where all chats will be end-to-end encrypted by default and messages in these chats will be deleted after a fixed time period, determined by the user. Google’s Allo was criticised by Edward Snowden for not implementing this end-to-end encryption across the app. The search giant has defended its decision, saying the app has features which rely on the Google Assistant and AI, and thus end-to-end encryption won’t be possible if users wish to utilise them.

Allo will also offer “Smart suggestions” or quick short replies that users can send to their friends in Allo. The app will learn more replies over time; the more a user relies on Allo, the better these ‘smart replies’ will get. Google’s machine-learning capabilities mean that Allo can even get an auto-response when someone sends a picture. During the Google I/O demo, the app was able to create conversational responses like ‘Yummy’ for a picture of pasta.

Allo will also give suggestions for restaurants and in the US, users will able to book a table at a restaurant inside the app via OpenTable. Google plans to add more such features in the future. Allo’s exact launch date is not yet known.
