India is an important market for tech companies, and the amount of efforts companies are putting to customize their services for Indian users proves that. Google’s Android is the most popular mobile operating system in the world, and with India being a key smartphone market, the search giant is putting its efforts to support the national language. With that in mind, Google Assistant has been updated with support for the Hindi language.

“The Google Assistant is truly Indian, it’s your helpful dost that speaks our language and understands the things you care about, from finding biryani recipes, to pulling up the latest cricket score, or finding directions to the nearest ATM. In order to make it even more useful to Indians over time, developers and businesses can now build Actions for the Hindi Assistant through the developer platform Actions on Google. Once an action is built, you can just say “Ok Google, talk to” and access the service or content straight through your Google Assistant,” Purvi Shah, Technical Program Manager, Assistant was quoted as saying in a press release.

In February, Google did mention that the AI-based voice assistant will be available in more than 30 languages by end of the year. Until now, Google Assistant could understand commands in Hindi, transcribe it to English, and reply to you in proper Hindi. But Google had clarified that the assistant was only available in English in India, and that the assistant in Allo messenger can understand Hindi.

The latest update with Hindi support is now being rolled out to Android smartphones running Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS and above. Support for devices running Android 5.0 Lollipop, Android Oreo (Go Edition) devices and iPhones will be coming soon, Google said.

You can say “Ok Google” or “press and hold the home button” on your smartphone to talk to Google Assistant. You can give Hindi commands to set an alarm, tell you about your day, find nearby restaurants or navigate using the fastest route to your destination.

To set an alarm, you could say ‘Kal subah mujhe saat baje jagaao’, or to click a selfie, you could say ‘Selfie kheencho’. To look for a nearby Punjabi restaurant, you can say ‘Sabse kareeb Punjabi restaurant kahaan hain?’, or for latest updates on cricket you could say ‘Cricket ka score kya hain?’.

Do note, to access Hindi Google Assistant, you will need to update your Google Search app to the latest version, and set your device language to Hindi.
