Google is bringing support for more languages to its mapping service. The search giant has announced support for 39 new languages with Google Maps.

The newly supported languages include Afrikaans, Albanian, Amharic, Armenian, Azerbaijani, Bosnian, Burmese, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Estonian, Filipino, Finnish, Georgian, Hebrew, Icelandic, Indonesian, Kazakh, Khmer, Kyrgyz, Lao, Latvian, Lithuanian, Macedonian, Malay, Mongolian, Norwegian, Persian, Romanian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovenian, Swahili, Swedish, Turkish, Ukrainian, Uzbek, Vietnamese and Zulu. It is actually a surprise that Google Maps didn’t support these languages until now.

Google Maps has become an indispensable application in the modern world. The app is a must-have, especially for those who drive themselves, and is also the mapping service provider for leading ride-hailing services around the world. By adding support for these languages, Google says it is making Maps accessible to estimated 1.25 billion people worldwide who speak these languages.

Google says more than 1 billion people use Maps to discover new places or find best driving directions to a place. It is possible that some of these people would already using Maps in English, and with the support for local language, Google is trying to make it even easier to get things done with the app.

In the past few quarters, Google has brought a ton of new features to Maps. It recently added bike mode for bike directions in India, and add support for wheelchair accessible routes in transit navigation. It also added a Mario-themed driving mode and real-time commute information on Android.

At an India event, it announced a new initiative to simplify Indian addresses with open-source Plus Codes. The company has also opened Maps API for developers to build real-world Augmented Reality games. It has also optimized the app with a lightweight version for Android Oreo (Go edition). With the addition of new languages, the app will become useful in more regions around the world.
