General News Google Search app gets smarter, can now understand and respond to complex questions

Google has improved its search engine algorithm that would enable users to make complex voice search queries.

“We can now break down a query to understand the semantics of each piece so we can get at the intent behind the entire question,” Google said in a blog post.

Google initially rollout its voice search feature in 2008 and since then, it has only got better. Earlier, it was able to provide information on individual entities such as “Shah Rukh Khan” and “Barack Obama,” and then it could answer questions such as “What did Leonardo da Vinci invent?” or “How old is Stan Lee?”

Now, when you search for “What are the ingredients for a screwdriver?” it is smart enough to understand that the user meant to ask about cocktail and not the tool, Google blog states. When you search for complex questions, such as “Who are the tallest Mavericks players?” or “What are the largest cities in Texas?” Google can now understand superlatives such as “tallest,” and “largest.”

In other questions such as “What was the population of Singapore in 1965?’ Google breaks down the query into pieces to better understand the semantics involved in it.

If you ask Google “Who was the U.S. President when the Angels won the World Series?” the system will figure out that “Angels” is a team, then look for “World Series” winners and finally check who the president was during that period. After the complex combination of searches, it could respond “George Bush.”

There are however, some searches that Google cannot respond properly. “We’re still growing and learning, which means we make mistakes,” Google said in the blog post. For instance, when you ask “Who was Dakota Johnson’s mom in the movie?” Google could respond with Johnson’s real-life mother Melanie Griffith, and not Jennifer Ehle who played the role of Anastasia’s mother Carla in the movie 50 Shades of Grey.

The improved voice search app is now rolling out to Android and iOS devices, starting today. You can go ahead and update the app from the respective app stores.
