Google is bringing a number of new features to its Chrome OS. These come after the company announced that it will bring Linux app support to its OS during Google I/O 2018. Google did not announce these features on stage during I/O 2018 and instead, they were spotted in sessions after the keynote. According to a detailed report by ChromeUnboxed, Google will bring some of the most requested features that are already present in Android to Chrome OS. These features include Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode, Gboard support, matching notification layout, Pro audio, and app shortcuts.

Other features specific to Chrome OS include improved pause states which means that users can resume where they left their work with any problem, drag and drop content to Android device, zero latency while using pen or inking in Android apps on Chrome OS and Chrome OS emulator on Android Studio for developers. Some other upcoming features including future support to “Snooze notifications” on Chrome OS was spotted on some “Chromium commits”. Chrome Story was the first one to support this feature on a Chromium commit.

For the people who don’t know, “commits” refer to the new changes in the code that developers make. This makes it easier for other developers to keep track of all the changes that were made when multiple developers are working on a single project. Chromium refers to Chromium OS, the open-source version of Chrome OS. Last but not the least, Google is finally adding SD card support to its apps on Chrome OS. This means that apps can not access the SD card to make use of the extra space on the card. Talking about other features listed above, a Reddit user but the name “marcellusmartel” pointed out that Google is finally bringing Chrome OS on part with Android.

Chrome OS users can finally use PiP mode making it incredibly useful for multitasking if they want to use one of the apps in full screen. After the decision to add PiP, it looks like Google finally realized that it needs to bring support for Gboard on Chrome OS. It is surprising that Gboard support is coming to Chrome OS this late in-spite of the fact that both Chrome OS and Gboard are developed by the same company.

Gboard is a much-needed upgrade to the on-screen typing experience on Chrome OS with improved text prediction engine, emoji, GIF and Bitmoji integration. Addition of Pro audio with Multi-channel USB audio, AAudio, and AAudio MMAP is aimed at improving the experience of music and recording artists that use Chrome OS-powered Chromebooks.
