General News Google is replacing its G Suite desktop app with Drive File Stream

Google is discontinuing its Google Drive app for desktop by end of this year, and replacing it with the Drive File Stream that will be available to G Suite customers. Announcing the new development on the official Google blog, the search giant informed that Drive File Stream was a new desktop application that was already available to “early adopters”. It allows users to quickly access all Google Drive files on demand, directly from their computer, meaning they don’t use any of their hard drive storage, and also spend less time in syncing files.

“Starting today, you will see settings in the Admin console for Drive File Stream (located at Apps -> G Suite -> Drive and Docs -> Data Access),” Google wrote. These new settings go into effect on September 26, when Drive File Stream becomes available to the general public. This is a continuation of Google’s efforts that saw it launch a consolidated “Backup and Sync” desktop app for Google Drive and Google Photos, in June. Subsequently, it will end support for its existing apps on Mac and PC.

For G Suite, Google will end support from December 11, and will shut it down completely by March 12, 2018. This means that current clients, especially institutional ones, have plenty of time to migrate to the new offering. “We encourage you to use Drive File Stream. As of today, Drive File Stream will be turned ON for all customers, but we’ll only show download links in the Drive interface if you currently show them for Backup and Sync / Google Drive for Mac/PC,” Google stated.

Despite being a shadow of Microsoft’s productivity tools for work, G Suite has more than 3 million paying business, CEO Sundar Pichai had announced in the earnings call in January. “G Suite achieved a significant new customer milestone last quarter,” he said. Back in November 2015, when G Suite was known as Google Apps for Work, there were about 2 million paying businesses. Pichai had attributed G Suite’s success — particularly with enterprise customers — to Google’s ability to offer its users a “smart and secure cloud platform”.
