General News Google working on a new OS called Fuchsia: Report

#1
As it turns out, Google is building a completely new operating system, which is not just an upgrade to Chrome OS or Android, but is instead a whole new system that isn’t derived from the Linux kernel, claims a report. The interesting bit: This OS will work across everything; from smart home devices to smartphones to the TV, aka, Google’s own OS for the Internet of Things.

The name of Google’s new OS is given on the project’s GitHub page, which says, “Pink + Purple = = Fuchsia (a new Operating System).” However, Google has not made an official announcement of the project yet.

All of Google’s operating systems till date are based on Linux; from ChromeOS to Android. But report hints that Google could be lookingto move on from Linux for an ecosystem of their own. The new OS uses a new Magenta kernel, which will be competing with other commercial embedded operating systems, like ThreadX and FreeRTOS. The Magenta OS will be scaled to work on smartphones, embedded devices and desktop computers, claims the report Android Police.

Google is using Dart as the programming code for the OS, and Flutter for the user interface. The OS will support 32-bit and 64-bit ARM CPUs, and also 64-bit PCs. According to an Android Police report, Google hopes to replace Android and Chrome OS with Fuchsia. But the caveat remains this might just be one of Google’s many secretive projects, that never actually makes it to consumers.

But Google has hinted in the past it wants to continue innovating on the software front. In June this year, Google CEO Sundar Pichai had said there was more to be done on the software front for Android Nexus smartphones. At the Recode conference, “We will be opinionated where we need to be and where we feel that we need to push the category forward. You’ll see us actually add, more thoughtfully features on top of Android on Nexus phones. There’s a lot of software innovation to be had,” Pichai had said.

The comments has sparked speculation that Google could be working on launching Nexus phones with more than just pure Android. For now, Google is expected to release the latest version of its Android OS, v7.0, dubbed Nougat next month. The company started rolling out the Developer Preview 5 of Nougat with final APIs in July, giving a near-final look of the OS.

There have also been talks of Google combining Android OS and Chrome OS. In fact, Google plans to bring all Android apps to Chrome OS this year, which will significantly boost the number of apps on the latter. We’ll have to wait and see if rumours about Fuchsia turn out to be true.
