HTC has launched Viveport, its alternative VR platform for non Steam VR experience. Viveport is likely to offer more general VR applications rather than gaming. The Viveport will be available across multiple platforms like mobile, desktop and VR environment.

HTC says a global developer beta will launch soon and Viveport will be available to customers later this year. The Viveport will offer a wide range of experience across categories like education, design, art, music, shopping, sports and more.

“Our mission is to unleash human imagination from the limitations of reality, and Viveport will be an important cornerstone in democratizing access to the world’s most diverse selection of immersive experiences,” said Cher Wang, CEO of HTC.

HTC says Viveport will empower content creators and developers to drive long-term engagement and monetisation. Viveport will feature pay-to-download, in-app-purchases, subscriptions, and more revenue generating opportunities. HTC Vive and Oculus VR are the only two major VR devices currently available in the market. Vive is HTC’s VR headset based on Valve’s Steam gaming platform.

“We believe equal access to virtual reality experiences will make the world a better place; enhancing our daily lives and the way we connect with everything. An important goal for the Viveport team is to enable developers to reach a global audience and grow their business,” said Rikard Steiber, Senior Vice President of Viveport.

With Steam being already popular among gamers, it is unclear why HTC is launching its own VR app store. HTC Viveport could primarily be an option for those who can’t access steam or in regions where Steam is unavailable.
