General News Here’s why Twitter won’t let you send a tweet that starts with ‘M’ or ‘DM’

Try sending a tweet that starts with just the alphabet ‘M’ or the phrase ‘DM’. You won’t be able to. The moment you compose a tweet starting with ‘M’ or ‘DM’, Twitter automatically directs you to a Direct Message and prompts that “This user doesn’t follow you”. We first noticed it when we came across Bollywood actor Farhan Akhtar’s tweet complaining about Twitter giving an error and not letting him send what seemed to be an ordinary tweet.

Hey @TwitterIndia , the tweet in the attached image was rejected 3 times from being posted on my TL. Any reason why?

Mocking the potholes on the Indian roads, Farhan Akhtar had written a tweet in gibberish, which started with the alphabet M. Twitter redirected his tweet to a Direct Message, consequently not allowing him to post as well. So basically, if you want to post ‘M awesome’ (which you probably shouldn’t even if Twitter allows) you wouldn’t be able to do so. In response to Farhan Akhtar’s twet, a user Tareque Laskar replied with a prompt message from Twitter that said tweets that start with M or D are used for direct messaging and the the user must edit the tweet.

Apparently, Twitter’s algorithm understands any tweet beginning with the aforementioned alphabets as a shortcut for sending a Direct Message. Twitter on its support page ‘Twitter SMS commands ’ mentions a certain set of actions that a user can perform by using designated commands, and tweets succeeded with alphabets M and DM are one of them. According to Twitter, if you write ‘M [username] + message’ that will be directly sent as a private message. And if you write ‘D [username] + message’ it sends that person a Direct Message that goes to their device, and saves in their web archive. However, note that this does not apply if you write a word beginning with the alphabet M, it is specifically the standalone alphabet M at the beginning of a tweet. For instance, our confused colleague didn’t anticipate Twitter would let him tweet this. Clearly, he didn’t think it through.

We reached out to Twitter and we will update as soon as we receive a response from their team. Other than that, there is another shortcut ‘@[username] + message’, which shows your Tweet as a reply directed at another person, and causes your Tweet to save in their mentions tab.
