General News How to create and send animated GIF on WhatsApp

WhatsApp has been working on adding a lot of features to its messaging platform. One of the recently rumored features has just made it to the beta version of its Android app. The feature gives you the ability to convert a six seconds video into a GIF image and send it to the recipient. While GIF support was initially spotted on iOS beta a couple of months ago, it is now available on Android beta, and the iOS version may follow soon.

Spotted by Android Police , the GIF support feature is available for Android users running beta version 2.16.242 and more. For those interested in trying out the feature can sign-up for beta program and download the app from Google Play Store. Now, while the option to share GIFs was always present, you were only able to send already downloaded ones. The new feature lets you record a video of six seconds or less and convert it into GIF. You can also convert the existing videos from your gallery into GIFs.

How to create and send GIFs on WhatsApp beta for Android

Step One: To begin with, tap on the attachment icon on the top of your chat screen. Next, tap on the camera and then on ‘record video.’

Step Two: Record a video of six seconds or less and tap on the arrow button. Before sending the recorded video, the trimming page will show up.

Step Three: If you look at the top right corner of the screen, there will be a camcorder icon. Tapping on that icon once will then show GIF icon, and the recorded video will start converting into a GIF image. Once it is done, a GIF image will be sent to the recipient.

(Do Note: the camcorder icon will only appear when the video is trimmed down to six seconds or less)

The publication has also pointed out that the converted GIF files are sent as audioless mp4 files, and they start auto-playing on the recipient’s chat window. Also, the animated GIFs you send are saved as MP4 files in WhatsApp > Media > WhatsApp Animated GIFs > Sent folder. Also, the notification received by the user shows as GIF image in the chat tab.

Other changes WhatsApp recently made to its messaging client include voicemail feature and a quote feature similar to Twitter, allowing users to reply to messages with quoted text. WhatsApp also recently added FixedSys font for Android and iOS, allowing them to use the new font by entering a back quote symbol (`) thrice before and after the text.
