General News How to turn off video auto-play on Facebook and Twitter
#1

Both, Facebook and Twitter have rolled out auto-play video feature that automatically plays GIFs, Vines and video ads. This feature is a boon for publishers and advertisers as it allows them to reach their target audience on social media. However, the danger of this feature was recently witnessed when thousands of users unwittingly witnessed a video of a journalist and cameraman being shot to death in Virginia.

There are other times when you come across random videos on your timeline, right from some baby dancing to some bike stunts or something more horrifying such as an accident. On smartphones, these auto-play videos also hog a good amount of your mobile data. Luckily, the feature does come with an option where you can disable the auto-video playback. Let’s take a closer look at how to stop those annoying videos on your timeline from playing automatically.

For Facebook

To stop auto-play videos on a PC: Login to Facebook, click on the upper right corner of the homepage and select “Settings”. Now, in the left hand column click on “Videos”. There are two options, “Video Default Quality” and “Auto-Play Videos”. Toggle auto-play videos to off and you’re done. (Note, this feature may not be available for some users in India)

To stop auto-play videos on Android: Open the Facebook app and tap on the hamburger / three lines on top right corner. Now, scroll down, select “App Settings”, then click on “Videos play automatically” and toggle to turn off.

To stop auto-play videos on iOS: Open Facebook app, tap on “More” hamburger / three lines on the bottom right corner of the screen, the tap on “Settings” and “Account Settings”. Then select “Videos and photos” and tap on “Auto-play”.  Toggle “Smart Auto-play” and choose “Never Play Videos Automatically”.

For Twitter

To stop auto-play videos on a PC: Login to Twitter, head to the main “Settings” by clicking on the thumbnail of your profile image. Now scroll down to the “Content” heading and uncheck the “Video Autoplay” box. Now click on “Save Changes” and you’re done.

To stop auto-play videos on Android: Open Twitter app, tap on three dots menu on top right corner to open app settings. Now tap on “Account Settings” and then tap on “General”. Next, head to the last option “Video auto-play” and toggle turn off.

To stop auto-play videos on iOS: Open Twitter app, head to “Settings and tap on “Account”.  Here, you’ll find an option called “Video Auto-play”, select “Never play videos automatically” and you’re done. You can opt to “Allow auto-play when connected to Wi-Fi”.
