General News ICC Champions Trophy hits show launches on Hindi GECs in June
MUMBAI: Compared to previous months, June 2017 witnessed a drop in the number of show launches on the various Hindi general entertainment channels (GECs) as the ICC Champions Trophy took centre stage.

Even as India entered the final and lost to Pakistan in the cricket contest, only five Hindi entertainment shows were introduced in June, which spanned across comedy, fantasy and mythological genres. These shows were launched on Colors, Star Plus, &TV and Sony Sab.

In the IPL month of May, Hindi GECs launched eight new shows in various genres.

Though there were not many new shows in June Sony Sab revamped its positioning by introducing a new logo and a new show. The channel also roped in Varun Dhawan as its ‘Happiness Ambassador’. [Image: L3YgiTi.jpg]

Sony Sab launched a new comedy series entitled ‘TV Biwi Aur Main’ on 13 June; it airs from Monday to Friday at 9.30 pm. The channel pushed its existing action comedy ‘Trideviyaan’ to the 10-pm slot and pulled the plug on ‘Dil Deke Dekho’.

Produced by Shashi Sumeet Productions, ‘TV Biwi Aur Main’ stars Karanveer Mehra and Shruti Seth in lead roles, along with Karan Goddwani, Ashwin Kaushal, Shivangi Verma, Tanvi Thakkar and Khushbu Thakkar. The show is based on the life of a TV serial producer and his struggle to balance his personal and professional life.

[Image: kuMatd8.jpg]The situations faced by him during shooting and handling his personal life offer comic relief to the viewers. Mehra plays the role of a producer while Seth plays his wife. The show marked the comeback of Mehra and Seth on television.

Sony Sab also announced its plan to launch the shows ‘Tenali Rama’, ‘Shankar Jay Kishan, 3-in-1’ and ‘Aadat Se Majboor’ in about two months.

Colors launched the remake of Doordarshan’s hit show ‘Chandrakanta’ on 24 June. The show replaced the channel’s popular show ‘Naagin 2’ at the weekend 8-pm slot.

Colors has retained the original title for the new version, which is being produced by Balaji Telefilms. An adaptation of a popular novel of the same title, ‘Chandrakanta’ aired on Doordarshan between 1994 and 1996.

‘Chandrakanta’ narrates the tale of a princess who lost her family and kingdom to a power war waged by an evil queen. While many believe the family to be wiped out, an infant Chandrakanta is found in a river by a simple fishing couple. Her true identity lost in the war, Chandrakanta grows up to be a strong warrior-like woman, whose focus and strong determination are unparalleled. However, her real journey starts when she crosses paths with the evil queen’s son, Prince Veerendra Singh, who finds himself enamoured by Chandrakanta’s entrancing beauty and falls hopelessly in love with her.

Some Bollywood personalities are part of this show. The 65-episode finite series is produced by Shristi Arya and is directed by Goldie Behl. It has been written by ‘Baahubali’ and ‘Bajrangi Bhaijan’ fame KV Vijayendra Prasad. The music of the show has been done by ace composer Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy, while the anthem is sung by popular singer Siddharth Mahadevan and Mahalaxmi Iyer.

It also marks the television debut of veteran Bollywood actor and Kajol’s mother Tanuja Mukherjee. She plays the role of Hahuma, the spiritual leader of the Dravidians, prophesying the future of the Dravidians as well as the Aryans.

‘Aarambh’ is said to showcase different human emotions spanning from love, jealousy and pride to hatred, greed and all the other shades in between. It is a story of the popular character Devsena (Karthika Nair) from ‘Baahubali’. The story revolves around the clash of two civilisations born and built out of two different existential needs—one desperately wanting what the other had and the other fighting to defend what they believed to be rightfully theirs.

&TV also revamped its programming line-up with the launch of two new shows—a mythological series ‘Paramavatar Shri Krishna’ and a comedy drama ‘Bakula Bua Ka Bhoot.’ [Image: 8D9Z9sB.jpg]

‘Paramavatar Shri Krishna’ was launched on 19 June and is telecast every Monday–Friday at 8.30 pm. The series replaced the channel’s existing show ‘Gangaa’.

The mythological series is produced by Peninsula Pictures and showcases various aspects of Lord Krishna’s life. The series recreates the journey of Krishna on earth and how he teaches a way of life at every step. Lord Vishnu is seen narrating the many aspects of Krishna’s life. The show stars Vishal Karwal as Lord Vishnu, Nirnay Samadhiya as little Krishna, Gulki Joshi as Devki, Chaitanya Choudhury as Vasudev, Raj Singh as Narad along with Neha Sargam, Gungun Uprari, Sachin Shroff and Romanch Mehta.

The show brings together veteran actors Sarita Joshi as Bakula and Apara Mehta as her sister-in-law Rekha. The show also stars actors like Deepak Pareek, Tulika Patel, Amit Varma and Muskan Bhamne.

The story revolves around a domineering and perfectionist woman named Bakula (Joshi). She is the sole decision-maker in her family. Due to an incident, Bakula is stuck between heaven and hell, and thus begins her journey from the ‘other side’.
