General News Jio impact: Vodafone launches free 1GB Wi-Fi at Delhi international airport
NEW DELHI: India’s second-largest telco Vodafone Tuesday teamed up with infrastructure firm GMR to create India’s largest Wi-Fi hotspot at the Delhi International airport.

Following deployment, the high-speed Wi-Fi services are available at both terminals of the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in New Delhi, the UK-based company in a statement said.

The offer comes at close heels of billionaire Mukesh Ambani-owned Jio's foray into telecom space with affordable data tariff.

On Monday Vodafone launched free subscription of its Vodafone Play app to all customers till December 31, 2016.

The service is now open for fliers to use at the IGI airport, after over three months of tests. More than a lakh inbound and outbound travelers use the IGI airport every day.

With this initiative, the IGI airport has become the country’s only airport to offer value-added service for telco’s pre-paid or post-paid mobile consumers, who can enjoy the complementary Wi-Fi service, it claimed.

The Vodafone subscribers will get 1GB free Wi-Fi on a recharge of 1GB and 2GB, 3G or 4G pack that can be used at Wi-Fi zone at the IGI airport or any other Wi-Fi zone powered by Vodafone.

The free 1GB Wi-Fi offer is also applicable on Vodafone U recharges of 1GB and above, the telco added.

“With customer needs evolving from voice to data, Wi-Fi is an effective technology to provide seamless connectivity to a large group of consumers in a defined space,” Sandeep Kataria, Director – Commercial, Vodafone India said.

“Our endeavour to offer Wi-Fi at the airport, will keep these travelers confidently connected on multiple devices, while they are transiting,” he said.

Travellers using Vodafone mobile services just need to click once on the Wi-Fi connect option in the My Vodafone app while those who want to connect to Wi-Fi using laptops or tablets need to select ‘VodafoneWiFi’ from the list of available networks and login by generating an OTP.

The UK-headquarted telco is also planning to set up information booths and kiosks at the domestic and international terminals of the Indira Gandhi International airport.

DIAL has now enabled Mobile Data Offload service platform at the Airport that promises to make internet access on mobile devices both fast and simple,” I Prabhakara Rao, CEO-DIAL said.

Rao added that their partnership with Vodafone would also ensure airport customers get to experience the best quality internet service using robust Wi-Fi network, which is the largest single Wi-Fi hotspot in India.
