India captain Virat Kohli has displaced Steven Smith to claim the No. 1 ranking for Test batsmen, the ICC revealed on Sunday (August 5). Kohli now becomes the seventh Indian batsman, and first since Sachin Tendulkar in June 2011, to climb to the top of the rankings.

Kohli made a fighting 149 in India's 274 in the first innings of the just-concluded Edgbaston Test, taking his side closer to England's first innings total of 287. He followed it up with another gritty knock of 51 in a botched chase of 194. His valiant contributions in India's 31-run defeat helped Kohli gain 31 points to end the 32-month reign of the now banned Australia captain.

Smith, who had held on to the top spot since December 2015, now trails Kohli by five points but isn't due to play any international cricket until at least March 2019 due to a 12-month suspension imposed by Cricket Australia for his part in the Newlands ball-tampering saga.

Apart from Kohli and Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Gautam Gambhir, Sunil Gavaskar, Virender Sehwag and Dilip Vengsarkar are the other India batsmen to have achieved number-one rankings during their careers.

Another big mover at the end of what was England's 1000th Test match was the 20-year-old all-rounder Sam Curran. The left-hander scored 24 and 63 with the bat, and claimed match figures of 5 for 92 which earned him the Man of the Match award. He subsequently jumped from 152nd to 72nd spot in batting charts while the bowling table has seen him rise 49 places to 62nd position. He is also now ranked 37th in the all-rounders category, after jumping 58 places.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Jonny Bairstow is the other English player to improve his ranking, as he now shares the 12th position with Windies' Kraigg Brathwaite after having moved up four spots courtesy his 70 and 28.

On the bowling front, while James Anderson has managed to hold on to his top rank, his lead over South Africa's Kagiso Rabada is now reduced to only two points. Meanwhile, both Stuart Broad and Mohammad Shami slipped one and two places each to now occupy 13th and 19th spot in the charts respectively.

Hosts England, who lead the five-match Test series 1-0, will take on India in the second match at the iconic Lord's in London, starting August 9.
