General News MIB awards 71 provisional MSO licences; subsidiaries of leading MSOs in the list

MUMBAI: The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB) has issued 71 provisional digital addressable system (DAS) licences between 5 December and 4 January. This makes it the biggest grant of licences at one go in a month since the MIB started awarding DAS licences.

Among the 71 licensees, eight have received pan-India licences including Hathway Cable & Datacom’s wholly owned subsidiary Bhopal-based Hathway Datacom Central.

Other entities that have received pan-India licences include Rajesh Fun Square, Superhits Digital Technologies, Ozone Media Comm, Aeon Communication, Juber Cable Network, Nucast Media, and Garvit Digital Services.

DEN Networks’ indirectly wholly owned subsidiary DEN ABC Cable Network Ambarnath has also received provisional registration for Thane, Raigad and other districts in Maharashtra under DAS Phases III and IV.

GTPL DCPL, a 51:49 JV between GTPL Hathway and Darsh Communication, has also received provisional registration for the states of Bihar and Jharkhand.

Sixteen MSOs have received licences to operate in multiple states. These include MR Network, Bham Bham Network, Triple Play Network India, Soni Cable Network, Channel Update, Khatri Cable Network, Bharti Cable Net Work, Sri Sai Kalyan Tandur Communications, Chitrashala Cable Network, Cowa Digital Cable Net, Sri Lakshmi Ganapathi Cable Network, Ganapati Cable, Kinnera Cable Network, Imam Communications, GK Cable Network Digital, and C K Cable Network.

Fifteen licences have been given to operate across a single state. These are Sharknet Cable Network, SS Cable Network, Paul Digital Cable, KBJ Digital Cable Network, Manisai Master Cable Network,SLNS Communications, Jind Digital Cable Network, Asian World Cable Network, Maheshwar Cable Network, Choudhary Cable Network, Sattyam Tori, Tayyab Cable Network, Krissh Digital Networks, Bajarangi Cable Network, and GK Cable Network Digital.

The single-state provisional registrations have been issued for states like Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal, Telangana, Tripura, Chhattisgarh, and Maharashtra. The remaining registrations have been issued for smaller areas such as a single or multiple districts in a state in DAS Phase III and IV areas. Altogether, the MIB has issued 905 provisional registrations until 4 January. The total registrations will be 901 if one excludes the MSOs who have obtained stay orders against the MIB’s cancellation of licences.

Moreover, the ministry has revised the areas of operation of Swami Cable TV Network to the states of Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. The MSO was earlier issued licence to operate in the National Capital Territory of Delhi area and the cities/towns/areas in UP, Punjab, Haryana, Bihar and Rajasthan in Phases II, III and IV.

The number of permanent registrations remains 229 while the ones whose licences have been cancelled or applications have closed stand at 44.
