MUMBAI: The ministry of information and broadcasting (MIB) has penalised 11 TV channels by asking them to go off-air between one-day to 30-days for violating the programming code.

In 2018, the ministry had directed CVR Health to go off-air for three days between 8-11 September for the telecast of obscene programme ‘Healthy Nights’ on 29.12.2016 and 30.12.2016.

In 2017, two channels namely V TV and DY 365 were pulled up for airing disturbing content. V TV was prohibited from re-transmitting channel for a day while DY365 was asked to go off-air for three days.

V TV was penalised for telecast a news programme ‘Viral Truth’ showing disturbing visuals of violence. In the case of DY 365, the channel had telecast a news report showing visuals denigrating child.

NDTV India, Care World, and NewsTime Assam were told to go off-air in 2016. Of the three, NDTV India and Care World obtained a stay order against the ministry decision.

NDTV India was ordered to prohibit the transmission or re-transmission of the channel for one day for the telecast of a news report on Pathankot terrorist attack.

Care World’s telecast of an obscene programme ‘Kya Karu Mai Aab’ resulted in the channel being asked to prohibit the transmission or re-transmission of the channel for seven days.

In the case of NewsTime Assam, an order dated 2.11.2016 was issued to the channel to prohibit the transmission or re-transmission of the channel for one day (to carry out the three awards of one day off air concurrently). The channel was found guilty of violating guidelines thrice.

In 2015, four channels namely NTV, Satlon News, Jai Hind and Al Jazeera were told to go off-air for a different number of days.

NTV was told to take the channel off-air for seven days due to the telecast a song-based programme ‘Cine Colors’.

Satlon News’ telecast of a news report about a private corporate party organised in a five-star hotel on the Pune-Mumbai highway earned it a 30-day ban.

Jai Hind was handed out a one-day ban for the telecast of A-rated film, titled ‘Hai Harithe’. Al Jazeera was told to go off-air for five days due to the telecast of news report carrying a wrong graphical map of India repeatedly.

In 2014, WB had to go off-air for a day due to the telecast of a “V/UA” certified film “It’s a Boy Girl Thing” showing obscene and women denigrating content.
