MIB directs broadcasters to carry ticker about DD Sports during live coverage of key sporting events

MUMBAI: In a controversial move, the ministry of information and broadcasting (MIB) has directed broadcasters to run a ticker during live coverage of sporting events of national importance that the event can also be viewed on DD Sports channel.

All channels broadcasting live sports events of national importance have to display a ticker stating, ‘This match/ game can also be viewed on DD Sports channel on DD Free Dish DTH and DD’s terrestrial network on free-to-air basis’.

Further, the ministry stated that the channels will also have to carry only this ticker, in appropriate colour, font and size (making it prominently visible) repeated every 15 minutes.

The ticker may be displayed from the point of start of the live broadcast to the end of live broadcast related to the sports event on the DTH/Cable Platform, it added.

“The broadcaster companies concerned shall adhere to the above instruction strictly. This order will come in force with immediate effect,” the MIB said in the order dated 25 April.

An industry source said that the MIB order has no legal standing as it has not been mandated in the Sports Broadcasting Act 2007. The source also stated that the direction tantamounts to promoting DD Sports.
