General News MIB grants six new TV licences in non-news category

MUMBAI: The ministry of information and broadcasting (MIB) has granted licence to six new TV channels between January and February. All the six new licences are under the non-news category.

G-Next Media has obtained the approval for three channels namely PTC Music, PTC Punjabi Gold and PTC Simran. Skystar Entertainment, which owns and operates Skystar Movies, has received two new licences Skystar Bangla and Skystar Telugu.

ZEE Entertainment Enterprises Limited (ZEEL) has received approval for licence under the name Zee Classic. Incidentally, ZEEL had shutdown Zee Classic last year and launched Zee Bollywood in its place.

Earlier, the ministry had processed 16 new TV channel licences in November and December 2018.

Star India had received four new TV channel licences including Star Sports 1 Kannada, Star Sports 1 Telugu, Star Movies Kids, and Star Movies Kids HD. Eenadu Television had got the approval to launch ETV Abhiruchi HD, ETV Cinema HD, ETV Life HD, and ETV Plus HD.

ZEEL had received licences for Zee Malayalam and Zee Malayalam HD while Cinema 24×7, a company owned by e-commerce and TV shopping company Naaptol, had received licences under the name NT8 and NT9.

It is pertinent to note that ZEEL had launched its Malayalam GEC Zee Keralam SD and HD under different licences

Delhi-based ad agency Graphisads had got the approval to launch P Plus and PTunes. Box Cinemedia Services and ARG Outlier Media had got the licences to launch Box Cinema and Republic TV Bharat respectively.

As on date, the ministry has permitted 889 private satellite TV channels. The ministry has cancelled 194 TV channel licences.
