MIB has granted permission to 573 channels containing Hindi as one of the permitted languages: Javadekar

MUMBAI: The ministry of information and broadcasting (MIB) has granted permission to 573 channels containing Hindi as one of the permitted languages.

“As on 31.5.2019, there are 573 numbers of Private Satellite Television Channels registered with Ministry of Information & Broadcasting containing Hindi as one of the permitted languages,” I&B minister Prakash Javadekar informed the Lok Sabha.

He also stated that cable operators who carry TV channels that are not permitted by the government face punitive action.

“As per Rule 6(6) of the Cable TV Network Rules, 1994, no cable operator shall carry or include in his cable services any Television broadcast or channel which has not been registered by the Central Government for being viewed within the territory of India. Necessary punitive action is taken by the Government on the violations of the said clause,” he added.

In response to another question, Javadekar said that the registration of various entities across different media is subject to terms and conditions prescribed under rules/guidelines applicable to the registration of that media.

As on date, the registration of 96 Publications, 6 Private FM Radio channels, and 260 Private Satellite TV channels have been cancelled/revoked, he stated.

“Amendment of rules and laws to bring them in conformity with current social, economic and regulatory framework is an ongoing process and is taken up on a need basis,” Javadekar said.
