General News MIB has granted permission to 906 TV channels till April; two new licences issued
MUMBAI: The total number of TV channel licences granted by the ministry of information and broadcasting (MIB) has touched 906. The MIB has granted two new uplinking/downlinking non-news TV channel licences in April.

Media Worldwide and IBC Tamil have received licences under the name Bong and IBC Tamil. Media Worldwide received the licence on 10th April while IBC Tamil was granted the licence on 18th April.

Of the 906 licences, 386 are news licences while 520 are non-news licences. The ministry has granted 26 TV channel licences till 18th April.

In April, the ministry had also granted TV channel licences to Punjabi news channel ABP Sanjha and CBeebies, BBC Worldwide’s popular pre-school kids channel.

Prior to that, 11 new TV channel licences were issued to three broadcasters on 25th March. Viacom18 had received nine TV channel licences while Star India and Hare Krsna Content Broadcast had got one licence each.

Viacom18 had received the licences under the names BDM, Connected, Eco-Lution, Hawa Mahal, IMIX, My Tube, Pick-A-Trick, Story City, and Treble. Star India has received a licence under the name Star Gold 2 HD while Hare Krsna Content Broadcast has received the licence to launch Hare Krsna.

ABP News Network had got four new TV channel licences from the MIB in February. Apart from ABP News Network, the ministry had also granted another new TV channel licence under the name Manoranjan Grand to Creative Channel Advertising and Marketing.

ABP News Network had received the uplinking and downlinking licences under the names ABP Andhra, ABP Ganga, ABP Kannada, and ABP Tamil. The broadcaster had recently launched an Uttar Pradesh/Uttarakhand focussed channel ABP Ganga.

In February, the ministry had granted four new licences under the non-news category. G-Next Media had obtained the approval for three channels namely PTC Music, PTC Punjabi Gold, and PTC Simran.

ZEE Entertainment Enterprises Limited (ZEEL) had received approval for licence under the name Zee Classic. Incidentally, ZEEL had shutdown Zee Classic last year and launched Zee Bollywood in its place.

Skystar Entertainment, which owns and operates Skystar Movies, has received two new licences Skystar Bangla and Skystar Telugu in January.
