MUMBAI: The ministry of information and broadcasting (MIB) has granted two and cancelled four TV channel licences in February, according to the status at a glance of permitted private satellite TV channels.

Discovery Communications India has received two new TV channel licences Discovery Jeet HD and DSport HD. Both the licences are in the non-news downlinking category. The licences were granted on 31 January.

The new licences ended a three-month drought as the ministry didn’t issue any new licences. No new licences have been granted in February, March, and April as well.

According to media reports, the ministry after Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore took over from Smriti Irani has issued three new licences to Baba Ramdev’s Vedic Broadcasting to launch Aastha channel in Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada. The ministry had only issued 45 TV channel licences in 2017.

Discovery Jeet is a Hindi GEC that launched on 12 February. The channel will undergo revamp in the second half of the calendar as it failed to garner enough eyeballs with its original content.

DSport is Discovery’s sports channel that focusses on niche sports like cycling, horse racing, golf, and fight sports. It has also dabbled in cricket with Pakistan Super League and Nidahas Trophy.

The four channels whose licences have been revoked are Indiavision Satellite Communications’ Indiavision News and Yes Indiavision, Sindhi Kachchi Entertainment Corporation’s SK TV, and Filmcity Communication Technologies’ Wellness.
