General News MIB waives off processing fee for devotional channels

MUMBAI: The ministry of information and broadcasting (MIB) has waived the processing fee for temporary uplinking and downlinking of devotional TV channels.

According to a PTI report, the ministry approved the waiving off the fee for temporary uplinking and downlinking of devotional TV channels on Friday.

Earlier, the devotional TV channels were paying Rs 50,000 per channel per day which was the amount stipulated for regional channels.

Yoga guru Ramdev thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and I&B minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore on behalf of the saint community for waiving off the processing fee on devotional channels.

Morari Bapu, renowned exponent of the Ramcharitmanas who recites kathas world over, also lauded the government for the decision.

In 2017, the ministry had levied a processing fee on TV channels in case there is a change of satellite, channel name/logo, language of channel, category of channel, mode of transmission, teleport, teleport location and category of channel from general entertainment to news for temporary uplink of a live event.

In case of a change of satellite, channel name/logo, language of channel, category of channel, mode of transmission of channel, teleport and teleport location, the ministry is charging a processing fee of Rs 1 lakh for national channels and Rs 50,000 for regional channels.

The ministry had also levied a processing fee per channel per day for temporary uplink of a live event under which national channels had to pay Rs 1 lakh for temporary uplinking while for regional channels the amount stood at Rs 50,000.
