General News Micromax Canvas Lapbook Review: A value for money entry-level Windows 10 netbook

Micromax has long dominated the smartphone market in India. Its strategy of aggressive pricing along with competitive hardware has evidently worked for the company, and even inspired several new entrants in the Indian smartphone market. After making a strong base in the smartphone market, Micromax is now eyeing other categories such as netbooks and affordable convertibles. Its recent laptop-tablet hybrid, the Canvas Laptab, bagged mostly positive reviews. Now, the company has launched a new netbook called the Canvas Lapbook.

Like the Canvas Laptab, the new Canvas Lapbook is priced aggressively at Rs 13,999 and will be taking on a few entry-level Windows 10 netbook such as the Asus EeeBook X205 and HP Stream 11, priced at Rs.15,490 and Rs 19,246, respectively. It’s worth pointing out that the Lapbook is among one of the most affordable netbooks in the market to run Windows 10 out of the box.

While affordable pricing and Windows 10 out of the box are certainly two main USPs, the Canvas Lapbook hits all the right notes with features such as the quad-core Intel Atom Z3735F processor, 2GB RAM, 32GB expandable storage and 5,000 mAh battery. We spent considerable time with the Canvas Lapbook to find out whether it is the best value for money compact entry level netbooks in the market right now.

At first glance, the Canvas Lapbook reminded me of the HP Chromebook, which is another entry-level compact netbook, though running Google’s Chrome OS. However, the Lapbook is much smaller with 11.6-inch display size, 19mm with lid closed and lighter at 1.3 kgs. The compact design of the Micromax is really impressive for its price point. Though it has plastic build, it certainly doesn’t feel cheap at all. Micromax has done a pretty good job at keeping the form factor sleek and comfortable.

One qualm I had with the Lapbook was its keyboard. Though the netbook has chiclet style keyboard and decently spaced as well, I was still unable to hit right buttons even after using it for a couple of days. It could be because I am used to wider keyboards with bigger keys. However, it could suit first-time netbook users, at whom it is targeted.

While the design is certainly is a key element, the netbook does conform to the basic requirement of an up-to-date connected device. For connectivity it offers Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, two USB ports, HDMI port, and standard 3.5 audio jack. It also has dual speakers, pumped up with Realtek ALC5645 Audio Codec. Other important features include 2GB RAM, 32GB expandable storage and 5,000 mAh battery.

The performance of the netbook is pretty average, but at par with what you can expect from a device at this price point. Be it basic browsing, watching high resolution multimedia or multitasking, the experience on the Lapbook felt fluid. The 11.6-inch IPS display, which has 1366×768 pixel resolution, isn’t very exciting. It delivers very average colors and the outdoor legibility also leaves a lot to be desired.

As said above Windows 10 is one of the main USPs of the netbook. The latest OS runs pretty smooth on the device. Multi-tasking and switching between apps is quite fluid on the device. The Lapbook has a VGA front camera, which is quite decent for video conferences or video messaging.

The Lapbook comes with 32GB of onboard storage. However, you can extend it to 64GB via microSD slot. Many might find it restrictive but that’s something expected from a device at this price segment. Of course, you can always use an external storage device.

What further amplifies the performance of the Lapbook is its 5,000 mAh battery, which is good enough to last a day on moderate usage, which is basic browsing and a few hours of YouTube streaming. Windows 10’s Battery Saver Mode ensures software optimization for battery conservation.

Be warned it’s not a gaming laptop or meant for power users. I will recommend to use the netbook for basic tasks such as browsing, e-mailing, music streams among others. In my opinion, the Lapbook could be a good device to consider for those who are sitting on the fence whether they should buy an affordable tablet or a laptop
