Mozilla has unveiled the latest version of its browser, Firefox 55, and it comes with multiple changes. The biggest change is the number of tabs supported in tabbed browsing. Previously, a Mozilla staffer released a blog mentioning how the latest versions of the browser can support over 1,500 tabs with ease without any lag. The latest version introduces support for 1,000 tabs. Mozilla has also made the browser a lot faster when it comes to restoring tabs after ending the session unexpectedly.

Supporting the claim with figures, Mozilla in its blog has mentioned what previously took up to eight minutes (to restore over 1,500 apps), the new browser version can accomplish it in less than 15 seconds. Along with quick restoring, Mozilla has also improved the speed of the search. Mozilla has introduced in-website search engine into the platform. A user can key in any search query, and the app will automatically pop up the websites in search results. Users can directly search from the website’s search engine. Different search engines are mentioned at the bottom of the search result query options. Mozilla also supports search within e-commerce portals like Amazon or social media sites like Twitter and Facebook.

Some of the top in-app search engines supported are – Yahoo, Google, Bing, Amazon, DuckDuckGo, Twitter, and Wikipedia. The options can be customized from within Settings menu. Apart from the in-website search engine, Mozilla Firefox is taking another step towards making Flash obsolete. The parts of a web page that use Flash to run now require special user permission without which they will not load. There are also other functional and aesthetic changes like printing from within print preview as well as shifting the side-bar to the left side.

Firefox has also launched a new version for 64-bit Windows users. The maker Mozilla is advising users to uninstall the older version, and reinstall Firefox 55 for better 64-bit support. The new version reduces crashed by up to 39 percent on devices with 4GB RAM and above. Talking about the new feature, Firefox blog mentions, “New downloads on 64-bit Windows will install the 64-bit version of Firefox, which is much less prone to running out of memory and crashing. If you don’t manually upgrade, no worries. We intend to automatically migrate 64-bit Windows users to 64-bit Firefox in our next release.”

The biggest change, however, is the introduction of WebVR to the browser. WebVR can be used by virtual reality developers to create VR content for web users. The browser will come with VR goggles, which on clicking can enable the VR mode, The WebVR will be supported by most VR goggles so the user does not need any equipment other than the one already present. Mozilla already has some VR-special games, and content lined up for users. With the move, Firefox is the first web browser to support WebVR. As Mozilla says, “Once you find a web game or app that supports VR, you can experience it with your headset just by clicking the VR goggles icon visible on the web page. You can navigate and control VR experiences with handset controllers and your movements in physical space.”
