As it awaits competition from Apple’s upcoming streaming service which is set to go live on March 25, Netflix has started testing an affordable subscription plan for users in India. The California- based company has now started presenting a Rs 250 subscription plan as an entry-level streaming plan for mobile-only users in the country.

The Rs 250 Netflix plan offers a mobile-only subscription for 30 days. This is half the price at which users currently pay for to stream in the standard definition under the ’Basic’ package.

The Rs 250 per month mobile-only plan allows subscribers to watch content in standard definition only a mobile screen only. This means, subscribers cannot watch HD content and the streamed content can only be played through their mobile phone or tablet and not from a PC.

Netflix confirmed to the Economic Times about the recent development and said “We will be testing different options in select countries where members can watch Netflix on their mobile device for a lower price and subscribe in shorter increments of time. Not everyone will see these options and we may never roll out these specific plans beyond the tests”.

Though a wider rollout isn’t yet confirmed by the company, the Rs 250 subscription plan joins Netflix's original three plans which are labelled as - Basic, Standard HD and Premium Ultra HD.

The Basic Netflix subscription comes at a price of Rs 500 per month and offers to stream on one screen in standard definition where viewers can download videos on only a single device. The Standard HD plan is available at a monthly cost of Rs 650 and provides users with the ability to watch and download on two screens at a time and also in HD quality. The most expensive Netflix plan in India is the Premium Ultra HD which costs Rs 800 per month. It offers streaming and downloading content across 4 devices at a time and video quality at HD and Ultra HD.
