General News Nine pay channels launched in Q4; total pay channels at 295
MUMBAI: Nine new pay channels were launched in the exit quarter of FY2017, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has said in its quarterly performance indicator report.

Further, no pay channel was converted into free to air (FTA) and one channel, namely Zee Q, was discontinued.

Sony Pictures Networks India had launched Sony Rox HD, Sony BBC Earth and Sony BBC Earth HD. The latter is a JV with BBC Worldwide.

Viacom18 Media had launched Cineplex HD, VH 1 and Comedy Central. Discovery Communications India had launched its sports channel DSport.

Celebrities Management had launched Travel XP Tamil while Star India launched Star Maa Movies HD.

During the quarter ended March 2017, there were 295 pay channels as reported by 48 broadcasters, compared to 287 pay channels reported in the previous quarter. These include 212 SD and 83 HD pay TV channels.

Apart from the radio stations operated by All India Radio, there are 293 operational private FM radio stations and 84 existing cities with operational FM radio channels, as on 31 March, compared to 273 private FM radio stations reported in the previous quarter.

According to the ad revenue reports provided by the private FM radio service providers, during the quarter ended 31 March, 20 new private FM radio stations became operational.

The reported advertisement revenue of the 293 private FM radio stations during the quarter ended March 2017 stood at Rs 528.57 crore as against Rs 547.76 crore in respect of 273 private FM radio stations for the previous quarter.

As on 31 March, out of the 268 licences issued (GOPA signed) for setting up of community radio stations (CRS), 206 stations are already operational.
