General News Nokia 5.1, Nokia 3.1 and Nokia 2.1 launched: Price, specifications and availability

HMD Global, the Finnish company with license to sell Nokia-branded smartphones, has announced three smartphones at an event in Russia. The smartphones are the successors to last year’s Nokia 3, Nokia 5 and Nokia 2. At MWC last year, HMD Global introduced the trio of Nokia 6, Nokia 5 and Nokia 3 as its first set of smartphones. While Nokia 6 received a successor at MWC this year, the Finnish company has now released successor for other models as well.

At its event in Russia last evening, HMD Global launched Nokia 2.1, Nokia 3.1 and Nokia 5.1 and plans to make them available globally in July. The smartphones will sit in the lower end of the price spectrum. Interestingly, HMD Global is bringing full screen displays and updated processor to the new Nokia 3.1 and Nokia 5.1 smartphones. These new devices look more modern than Nokia 6.1, which is stuck with the 16:9 display. All the three phones are budget-oriented devices.

Nokia 5.1 Specifications and Price
Of the three devices announced yesterday, the Nokia 5.1 is the most premium offering. It features an aluminum unibody design carved out of a single piece of 6000-series anodized aluminum and features satin finish for an ergonomic feel. It features a 5.5-inch Full HD+ display with a resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels and 18:9 aspect ratio. The new display is larger and taller than the 5.2-inch 16:9 display found on its predecessor.

Powering the device is an octa-core MediaTek Helio P18 CPU clocked at 2.0GHz coupled with 2GB or 3GB of RAM and option for either 16GB or 32GB storage. It also supports expandable storage up to 256GB via SD card slot. The Nokia 5.1 also gets an updated 16-megapixel primary camera with phase detection autofocus and dual-LED flash. There is an 8-megapixel camera at the front for selfies.

Nokia 5.1 supports WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC, GPS and 4G LTE. While the Nokia 5.1 features thinner bezels, it continues to retain the fingerprint sensor at the front of the device. It is backed by a 2,970mAh battery and will be available in copper, tempered blue and black color. The Nokia 5.1 will start at €189 (around Rs 14,800) and will be available from July.

Nokia 3.1 Specifications and Price
HMD Global says Nokia 3 was its best-selling smartphone last year and its successor improves on every key element. The smartphone also features an anodized aluminum chassis with a polycarbonate back like its predecessor. It sports a 5.2-inch IPS LCD display with a resolution of 1440 x 720 pixels.

Under the hood, there is a MediaTek 6750 chipset with 2GB or 3GB of RAM and 16GB or 32GB of storage. The Nokia 3.1 also gets a bump in the camera department with the smartphone now supporting a 13-megapixel main camera while the selfie camera uses an 8-megapixel sensor with 84.6-degree lens.

The Nokia 3.1 will be available starting next month in blue/copper, black/chrome and white/iron colors. It is priced at €139 (around Rs 10,900) for the base variant with 2GB RAM and €169 (around Rs 13,300) for the 3GB RAM variant.

Nokia 2.1 Specifications and Price
Nokia 2.1 is the entry-level device in the list and it will cost €99 (around Rs 7,800) when it goes on sale in July. The smartphone is the successor to last year’s model which was being sold as battery-centric smartphone. The smartphpone features a polycarbonate back and a 5.5-inch display with 720p resolution and 16:9 aspect ratio.

It is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 chipset coupled with 1GB RAM and 8GB storage. There is an 8-megapixel autofocus camera at the back and a 5-megapixel selfie camera at the front. The Nokia 2.1 retains the 4,000mAh battery found on original Nokia 2 and HMD Global claims it can last two days on a single charge.

Nokia 2.1 is the second Android Oreo (Go edition) smartphone from the company, which should lead to less memory use and optimized experience. The smartphone will be available in Blue/Copper, Blue/Silver and Gray/Silver color options.

Android P Updates for all phones
Nokia 3.1 and Nokia 5.1 are the newest devices from HMD Global to be Android One certified. They run Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box and will get monthly security update along with core Google services and support. The Finnish company also confirmed that all its devices will get Android P, the next version of Google’s dessert-named mobile operating system.
