General News Opera Mini claims to save Rs 690 crore in India with its data compression feature

Opera Mini mobile browser users saved 40,135,582 GB of data in one year, reveals an analysis of the behavior of Opera Mini users in India. The saved data is worth Rs 690 crore, calculated on the basis of Rs 173 per 1GB on an average. Opera Mini recently introduced compression technology that shrinks data by up to 90 per cent, helping users save data. Here are the key points from the analysis:

Google Search: As many as eight out of 10 Opera Mini users use Google to search online.

Social networking: 55 per cent webpages visited by Opera Mini users in India comprise of social networking sites. Half of all webpages are Facebook pages. Others include Blogspot and WordPress, followed by Twitter, Pinterest and Quora.

News, the second-most popular content: The list of top 100 websites visited by Opera Mini users in India includes 31 news sites. The analysis reveals there is a consistent growth in visits to Hindi news sites.

“With their increased usage of smartphones, consumers have moved beyond using internet only for social networking. Consumers are now using their smartphones as handheld computers to browse news, shop online, watch movies and listen to music on the move,” says Bruce Lawson, Deputy CTO at Opera.

“To stay ahead of our consumers’ ever-evolving needs, we keep updating Opera Mini to help them browse faster and more efficiently. The latest version of Opera Mini comes with new updates such as language support, ad blocker integration and video boost,” Lawson adds.

Music sites most visited: The list of top 100 websites visited by Opera Mini users in India includes 24 are download portals. 75 per cent of these 24 download portals are for downloading music.

YouTube is all-time favourite: YouTube is still one of the top 3 most visited sites in India. There’s also Google and Facebook in the first 3 slots. YouTube followed by Vuclip, Dailymotion and Hotstar are the most popular video streaming sites.

Smartphone browsing is getting popular: The analysis reveals 9 per cent of the top 100 websites visited through Opera Mini in India are e-commerce and classified websites. The page views have increased by 40 percent as compared to last year. Amazon, Flipkart, Snapdeal, ShopClues, AskMeBazaar and Olx are the most visisted sites.

The information in the report was collected from Opera Mini servers from June 2015 to May 2016.
