Reliance Jio seems set to roll out its 4G services in India in the coming weeks , and almost every day we come across some new information about its upcoming plans and services. Along with 4G services, it seems Jio is also gearing up to launch Internet Protocol (IP)-based TV services, and has recently imported set-top-boxes to India.

Reliance Jio has imported over 17,000 set-top-boxes from Vietnam, which were spotted on Zauba by TelecomTalk . The import-export site also reveals that each box is priced around Rs 5,500. Jio has already built an ecosystem of apps for its 4G mobile subscribers, and offers access to live TV channels and on-demand movies via apps like JioPlay and JioOnDemand. The imported set-top-boxes could be a hint towards the company’s plans to offer similar services to its users via fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) connectivity. This also adds weight to earlier reports claiming that Jio planned to launch services that will compete against existing DTH operators.

It is worth noting that Reliance Jio has successfully procured pan-India multi-system operator (MSO) license from the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB). This license enables Jio to either broadcast something directly to a subscriber or through a local cable operator.

It is not just set-top-boxes, but earlier this year,
Reliance Digital also launched three 4K-capable smart LED TVs under its LYF brand . The TVs come in 43-inch, 50-inch and 65-inch, and are priced at Rs 65,990, Rs 84,990, and Rs 199,990 respectively.

Currently all eyes are on Reliance Jio, as people await the launch of its much-awaited 4G services. Jio’s entry into the space is bound to shake up the industry, and as we reported yesterday, some of the tariffs are eight times cheaper than what is being offered by the likes of Airtel and Vodafone. The company already boasts a user base of over 1.5 million by virtue of it preview offers. But with partnerships with RCom, and the likes of Samsung and Apple more recently , this number is set to explode sooner than later.
