Reliance Jio subscriber base crosses 100 million in 170 days: Mukesh Ambani

RIL’s Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani has announced that Reliance Jio has now hit the 100 million subscribers milestone in India. The company says it added seven customers every second on average. Jio’s feat comes after 170 days of its commercial launch in September last year. Reliance Jio is now rapidly narrowing gap with the market leader Airtel, which is estimated to have 269.40 million subscribers in India. According to a recent COAI data, Vodafone and Idea Cellular have 206.44 million subscribers and 192.06 million subscribers respectively.

Thanks to its free offers, Jio’s subscribers have increased at a fast pace. Just in January this year, the company announced crossing 72 million subscribers in India. It may be recalled that the company had raced to 50 million subscribers in just 83 days. “Jio has added 7 customers every single second of every single day. This is an unprecedented level of acceptance for any technology company, anywhere in the world,” Ambani said.

Back in December, Ambani had said that Reliance Jio had grown faster than Facebook and WhatsApp in the first three months of its launch. Even as Reliance Jio has grown in stature, the company grapples with call drops problem due to lack of adequate quantity of internetconnect points from the rival telecom operators. However, the company hopes to improve the situation in the near future.

“The POI capacity provided by these operators is still way below requirement and is falling short of the customer addition pace of Jio, resulting in quality of service issues for Indian customers. The resultant call failure rates continue to be of the order of 175 calls failing out of every 1,000 calls from Jio to Airtel network when the QoS regulations mandate that no more than 5 calls out of every 1,000 calls can fail,” Reliance Jio had stated last month.

The fast rate of subscriber addition can be attributed to Reliance Jio’s lucrative offers, which includes free data, bundled app subscriptions and free voice calls for the lifetime. After the expiry of its Welcome Offer, Reliance Jio extended the freebies till March 31, 2017, under its Happy New Year scheme.
