MUMBAI: Sony Pictures Network India (SPNI) has discontinued three of its high definition (HD) channels with effect from 31st December. The three channels – Sony Le Plex HD, Sony Rox HD, and Sony Ten Golf HD – have been removed by all the direct to home (DTH) and cable TV platforms from the effective date.

Elaborating on the reason for discontinuing the three channels, the broadcaster said that these channels have dispersed and niche viewership.

“Constant evaluation of our channel portfolio mix ensures that all our channels always offer content that resonates with viewer preferences. We have decided to discontinue broadcast of Sony Le Plex HD, Sony ROX HD and Sony TEN Golf HD since these channels have a dispersed and niche viewership,” an SPNI spokesperson told TelevisionPost.com.

The spokesperson also added that the programming of the three channels being shut down will be carried on other network channels in their respective genres.

“However, other channels of SPN will continue to carry the programming of the 3 channels that are being shut down. So, in effect, while the above specified channels will cease to exist, their programming will be integrated with other mainstream channels within their respective genres,” the spokesperson said.

Incidentally, all the three HD channels were positioned as premium offerings in their respective genres.

Sony Le Plex HD was a premium English movie channel aimed at targeting the discerning viewer. Launched in August 2016, the channel’s brand proposition was ‘52 Premieres In 52 Weeks.’

Sony Rox HD was a premium youth focussed music channel which made its debut on 15 January 2017. The channel targeted at youth in 15-21 age groups sought to differentiate itself from other music channels through outstanding video (HD) and audio (Dolby) quality, day parting or playing mood-based music and original music based programming.

Sony Ten Golf HD was the only sports channel dedicated to Golf in India. SPNI had earlier revealed plans to launch replace the channel with Sony Marathi HD.

SPNI owns and operates 18 standard definition (SD) and 11 high definition (HD) channels. The SPNI-owned channels reach over 700 million viewers in India and is available in 167 countries.
