[Image: Saregama-main.jpg]MUMBAI: Music and video content company Saregama has taken a strategic call to walk out of non-IP (Intellectual Property) Hindi TV business.

Most national broadcasters retain the IP of the show they commission. Production houses end up working on a commission basis for TV broadcasters.

Incidentally, Saregama was exploring new programmes with the top Hindi GECs after the Hindi TV production business turned profitable last year. In FY17, it had offered two Hindi shows “Savdhan India” on Life OK (now Star Bharat) and a daily soap “Sanyukt” on Zee TV.

The company will instead focus on South TV production business and the newly formed film production brand Yoodlee. The company will get to retain the IP in both the cases.

Saregama aims to remain a pure-play content company capitalising on the data boom globally, with focus on higher monetisation of existing IP (1.2L owned songs & 3000 hours of Tamil serials) through greater presence on all third-party digital and TV platforms and launch of Saregama branded physical products with embedded music.

It also aims to build new IP through new film music acquisition across Hindi, Tamil and Marathi languages, TV programmes in the Tamil language, and low budget thematic films targeted at youth with primary exploitation on digital platforms.

As far as South TV content is concerned, the company expects that inventory to start getting liquidated in FY18. It expects higher margins from this business.

In South, Saregama produces content for Tamil GEC leader Sun TV. It gets to retain the IP as Sun TV works on slot sale model. The company currently has three shows in Tamil namely Chandralekha, Valli and one-hour weekly -Bhairavi. IN FY17, it launched a serial in Kannada titled Jo Jo Laali.

The company is also betting big on Yoodlee business as data explosion due to 4G roll-out has resulted in growing demand for ‘exclusive’ content from all OTT players and TV channels.

Yoodlee will produce thematic films with tightly controlled budgets targeted at 18-35 years segment. The content will heavily focus on story and not the star cast. It will produce movies in all languages. The stories will be selected keeping the international audience in mind.

The company is ready with five films are ready with the first theatrical release scheduled for November. All the five movies were shot in 18-21 days each. The launch of ‘Brij Mohan Amar Rahein’ has been postponed to make Ajji the first release

The SVoD and TV licensing deals for the films will start from end Q3 / early Q4.

For the quarter ended 30 September, Saregama’s net profit more than doubled to Rs 4.46 crore from Rs 2.09 crore. Total revenue grew 76% to 84.46 crore while EBITDA jumped 84% to Rs 10.79 crore.

The company’s music Business grew by 134% while TV software business adversely affected by fall in the advertising market. The company sold 95,000 units of portable digital audio player Carvaan and its variants during the quarter.
