General News Sarfraz named captain of ICC Champions Trophy Team of the Tournament

Sarfraz Ahmed, who led Pakistan to the Champions Trophy 2017 title, was named as the captain of the ICC Team of the Tournament, on Monday (June 19). The team comprises: four Pakistanis, three Indians, three Englishmen and one Bangladeshi, with Kane Williamson taking up 12th man duties.

Sarfraz composed a crucial innings of 61 not out against Sri Lanka in the group phase of the tournament. He also effected nine dismissals and showed fine leadership qualities through the course of the tournament.

"To be appointed as captain of the Team of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017, which includes some of the finest and most attractive cricketers of this generation, is the perfect icing on the cake," remarked Sarfraz. "But I am more happy and delighted for players like Fakhar Zaman and Hassan Ali, who impressed their peers through their talent and performances, and found their way in the side. These two lads, plus Shadab Khan, are the future of Pakistan cricket and I sincerely hope they will only go in the upward direction from here.

"The ICC Champions Trophy 2017 has been a fairy tale journey for the Pakistan cricket team. The event showed the team's grit and ability to bounce back solidly when the chips are down. I am confident that the faith and trust of the Pakistan cricket team will be strengthened with this performance of the side."

Meanwhile, Shikhar Dhawan, who topped the batting charts for the tournament with 338 runs, was picked as the opener. He will partner Fakhar Zaman, who too made an impact by crunching a hundred in the final against India. Having made his ODI debut in Pakistan's second match of the tournament, the swashbuckling opener also compiled knocks of 31 against South Africa, 50 against Sri Lanka and 57 against England in the semi-final.

Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal (293 runs), whose fine run in the tournament helped his side reach the semis, will slot in at No. 3, with the two mainstays of their respective batting line-ups - Virat Kohli (258 runs) and Joe Root (258 runs), taking up the next two slots in the line-up. Ben Stokes (184 runs and 3 wickets), the charismatic England all-rounder, will take the No. 6 position in the batting order. Stokes gave a glimpse of his class and quality by composing a career-best unbeaten 102 against Australia in the group phase of the eight-team tournament.

Sarfraz will don the gloves, while legspinner Adil Rashid (seven wickets), and the pace trio of Bhuvneshwar Kumar (eight wickets), Junaid Khan (seven wickets) and Hassan Ali (13 wickets) form a formidable bowling line-up. Hasan, in particular, impressed by bowling incisive spells in the Champions Trophy, bagging 13 scalps at an astounding average of 14.69. The fast bowler won the Golden Ball award for his impressive efforts.

The side was picked by a jury that included former cricketers: Michael Atherton, Sourav Ganguly and Ramiz Raja. The panel also comprised writers like Lawrence Booth and Julian Guyer with ICC's General Manager, Geoff Allardice, acting as the chairman.
